Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I spread the crack, used the highest tonnage rating epoxy I could find, injected it, and let the rim do the clamping. No good. Honestly, I didn't even realize it was cracked until I got a couple "mystery flats", and decided to investigate. The structural integrity needs to be restored, and glue won't do that.

You can do the fifties, for example, in the cold winter months, and make the distance with 150km rides. A bit complicated, but I like the concept for (a) an Audax award, (b) the need for strategising throughout the year to end up with the minimum 1200km, and (c) it encourages riders back into the sport. They also can be made up of Permanents or organised Audax events.

Anyway, we finished the series with a 50. And it was so darned tough... one of the toughest rides I have done EVER. Might seem a bit trivial for distance, but this had some climbing, and all but one climb were into the wind. Wind? Yep, gusts over 70km/h funnelling down the valleys and directly into the face.

And you need to pay attention to 50s at the 15km/h minimum speed... you don't get much time to play with before getting to a checkpoint at 37km, as well at the one at 50km... we just made the 37 one with 13 minutes to spare after being 15 minutes behind at the top of the last clilmb. We finished 12 minutes within the time limit... after the last big climb that featured 9 to 14% grades.

Phew!!

Sweet ride, LAJ. How many miles and how many feet did it end up? Did you get back before the rain?
Here's one from today's ride.

Gotta get faster, I guess.

I have zero experience with crabon wheels, but I do know something about structural integrity, and I agree. How much is your life worth, anyway?

Polished aluminum. $725 from wrenchscience. My gravel/commuter/camping/bike park bike.

And thanks to WhyFi, I learned today I can't use it with the Campy's flat mount disc calipers. That stinks. At least I don't have to wait for Potenza any more.

That rim has seen plenty of miles. Time to go. Williams will probably do a crash replacement deal if you want a new front.

Somewhat oddly, the insurance covers the cost of the drug, but not the syringes with which to take it.

You going to go Shimano?

Part of me wonders how compatible one manufacturer's hydro levers would be with the calipers from another. How far off could they be between the cylinder in the lever and the pistons in the caliper? I can't see them being that different.

I watched the Pittsburgh Pirates win their final game of the season against the Washington Nationals. it was the longest 9 inning game in their history dating back to the team's inception in 1882. it was 4 hours and 22 minutes long. a good gift of extra baseball as the season ends. before the game I rode for little over an hour in cool conditions. we will get back to the low 80's A on Tuesday. it was almost balaclava weather. the high temperature was 74 frigid degrees.
