Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Computer/light mount with integrated bar/stem

Hi all,

My new frame will have an integrated pro stealth bar and stem combination.

So far, the only computer mount that I have found is the barfly spoon. I’m wondering if it will accommodate a light below the computer like so many of the others do. Unfortunately, the photos do not indicate if this is possible. Also if anyone has this, i’m wondering where they put their DI2 junction box.

If there are any other options please let me know.

Thanks as always!

A tangent, for sure, but consider getting a handlebar-end jct box. It simplifies a lot of things.

I’d like to get the handlebar junction but might have been told that it would not work with these bars? I’ll double check. Thanks for the recommendation, do you have this mount and any pics by chance?

Edited to add, can’t find a Tangent computer mount for bikes. Only bmx stems and components

Curious as to how it simplifies.

As well and given how many times I have knocked off an h-bar end plug, I decided I'd rather have the Junction A box under the stem and out of the way, not as pretty, but maybe safer.

I’ve also knocked out quite a few plugs, but the junction box version I’ve seen seems pretty snug and I wonder if it perhaps has an expanded plug of some sort (I’m going to check that out). I don’t mind the box under my stem but don’t want to use the rubber strap to do it since the bar/stem combo are being painted to match the frame (shallow thought I know). Right now the box is under my barfly mount and my headlight for early mornings goes on the bars. With the new set up I’m hoping to keep everything tidy on the mount.

Watched a couple of videos on installing the bar end. Other than a lot of wire fishing not too bad. Next to impossible to rip out of the bars, there is a snap retention system that is put on the end that adheres to the bar and then wrapped over with your handlebar tape. Pretty clean and nice. Other than the fact that I already have the wiring and Junction A that came with the group I may look at doing.

I got some mixed messaging on both the K-Edge Splayd computer mount and the Barfly Spoon so I've reached out to both companies. Hoping someone here will have a similar set up. Haven't found any other mounts yet.

Looks like the Spoon is one-sided and can only mount one accessory.

Yup, bang on. Just got a response from them saying same thing. Now we’ll see what k-edge says. Their website had conflicting info

To avoid any confusion, let me mention I'm talking about Shimano EW-RS910.

Also, and I may just be stating the obvious here, PRO is Shimano's components division. The current model of their integrated handlebars and stem even have a small blue label to advertise the EW-RS910 option. That said, I don't know the compatibility status of any previous models.

Yes, I have the EW-RS910 (in 3T Aeronova bars, with fully-internal cable routing). There's nothing to see, literally, so pics beyond what an internet search will give you are sort of meaningless. Beyond aesthetics, my problems with the SM-EW90 jct box included routing of the Di2 cables into the box and the stem strap, both in and of themselves and when attempting to put say a computer mount on the stem. My bike setup changes depending on circumstances and SM-EW90 often prevented the easy solution to a temporary situation.

My biggest gripe with SM-EW90, however, is more personal: I store my bike vertically and my natural instinct is to grab the stem to put it away.

See response no.9 above.

EW-RS910 comes with casing that makes it all but impossible to knock off. Personally, I only used that solution for a brief period, partly because it prevents field maintenance. Instead, I used to fold over the handlebar tape and stuff it in with the end plugs, incl. EW-RS910. At the moment, I've done away with the fold and simply hold them in place with a bit of handlebar tape wrapped around the plugs. It seems to work but I don't have long-term experience.

Understood and thank you! I've talked to the Pro folks, and you are absolutely right, the new Pro Stealth (not last year's though) are equipped to handle. I'm assuming and have double checked that the company building my frame and painting the pro stealth bar do order per job so I should be good to go on that. Now I just need to measure the wiring I've received and decide if I want to order the EW-RS910 and potentially more wires and then deal with selling what I have (not a big deal since I have an extra Internal 9100 battery that I need to sell anyway).

When asking about a pic I was hoping that perhaps you had an integrated stem/bar combo with a mount that could handle both garmin and light (or go pro). So far I'm coming up empty but still waiting for response from K-Edge since I received mixed messaging there. I may have also found a mount intended for the Vision bar/stem combo which seems to have the same mounting set up as the Pro

Thanks again for the response!

Yup, good points. I have my Garmin 1000 on my mt. bikes with reversed out front mounts so as to keep the computer better protected. It’s a theory at least, but it does make it a pain to grab the stem to roll or lift.

My point about the bar end junction box was not about the unit getting knocked out, but that the bar end is a vulnerable location, judging by how many plugs I lose.

Well bummer, despite the mixed messaging and some photos seems like the K-Edge is also no longer offered as a combo mount. The rep said that weight up front was an issue, perhaps they were bending or breaking.

I may order one of the items found in amazon listed as a combo and take my chances. Worse comes to worse I strap my light on the traditional way or Macguiver something

Taking a small leap of faith. Despite being told by K-Edge that the Splayd mount does not accept the combo modification there are enough pics and people selling that it seems like it does. Maybe they're older ones... At any rate, I ordered one, worse comes to worse if it's not right I can send it back but ultimately I still need a mount so this will work even if I have to put the light on in a more traditional manner.

I'm also going to wait to order the bar end junction box along with additional e-tube wires since the framebuilder has said that the Pro bars they've been receiving are not yet bar end box compatible. Probably it has the internal routing for everything but perhaps not workable through the bends, we shall see.
