Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

There's a new "cyclists that don't obey traffic signs" thread on my NextDoor. It's like a one-sided A&S thread, minus the self-loathing and any two-wheeled perspective. Fun times.

Here's a nice video you can post. 6/21 cars actually stop for a stop sign, unfortunately they didn't tape 'em all.

I don't always run red lights while riding, but when I do... I wait for a car to pull up behind me, I make lingering eye contact with the driver, I point at the red light, and then I clip in/sprint through the intersection without looking. Doing my part to fuel the hatred of cyclists.

The heavy, entry-level wheelset on my CX bike have bladed spokes.

I will be the first to admit less than full compliance with stop signs. I typically treat them as yields and slow down...but stop only if there is a car there before me.

No, the fact that you got a base layer.

But it strikes me as so strange how many people on BF spend a lot of time/energy concerning themselves with what other people are thinking. What should I wear? Why didn't the other guy wave? He passed me so he must think he's better than me! And so on. I get it if you're 13 years old and in junior high. But once you're a fully formed adult, I'm confused as to why you would not just do you thing and be content with it.

If 45 made the Idaho stop a nationwide law, I'd think he's as great as he thinks he is. maybe.

OK, that's the last AnS and/or PnR post from me for the rest of the day.

Hey, time is money.

...and those spokes are on a supposedly "entry level" wheelset
...and it's actually a new funnin' around bike, which I am going to use for fair weather commuting, inter alia.
...and I'm a kindly old man who deserves nice things.

I meant BF but the only other internet forum I participate in is a timeshare forum and people are definitely not like that. People who work the system with el cheapo timeshares are admired for being smart and gaming the system. People with expensive luxe timeshares are admired because that's where everyone else wants to go. There really seems to be none of the petty jealousies, butt hurt, insecure assumption the other guy is looking down on you, concern about what that other guy thinks of you. Its much more about sharing common knowledge and learning how to work every timeshare system to get the most out of it. Its very heavily moderated though- if you make trouble or troll or don't follow the rules, you're outta there. The rules are not onerous, its basically just "don't be a jerk and don't talk about politics", so it works very well and you can hang out and learn a lot, with almost zero drama.

I just checked the weather for our Lake Placid/Whiteface....overnight low Friday night/Saturday morning is 44F. I suppose I should pack arm and leg warmers.

I understand it if you want info about a product. "How much of a climbing difference will it actually make if I get a lighter carbon mtb?" for example. That's a reasonable question (getting a reasonable answer is much harder though).

But questions like "should I wear this or will I look stupid?" when you're 50 years old. That I don't get.

I had that wheelset on my Frankenbike. Sold that bike to a college kid a couple of years ago.

Mine are Vision Team 30s, which was least expensive choice Lynskey was offering. They seem like nice enough wheels and durable enough to support my 150 lbs for a few years.

Same phenomenon, just higher price tags. People seeking peer approval of purchases.

And I'm old AND out of the loop. And a retrogrouch. Is there really anything to them. It's always seemed to me that they would create more turbulence than round spokes.
