Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Easier to notice windup when building wheels. And they make little bladed spoke grabbers to resist windup while building.

These are sitting behind very pudgy tires. I have the little slotted tool and yes, the amount of wind-up is impressive when you see it.

You're entitled to your opinion of course but I disagree with you that every question people ask about equipment is fundamentally a cry for peer approval. Sometimes its a question about value given the individual's paradigm, whether a product is durable enough or will make enough of a performance difference or even just qualitatively just result in enough improved "enjoyment" to be worth the trouble or expense in making the change to the new thing. Sometimes its a totally legit and reasonable query. Other times its a manifestation of worrying about what other people think.

It can be that way up there this time of year. When I crossed the county we stayed in Booneville, NY for two nights right around this time. Maybe a few days later. It was quite chilly and damp both nights. Lucky to have stayed in an old barn a guy had converted into a camping/indoor sleeping place. Can't remember where we stayed when we left there, but it was pleasant. The day after that it got cold.and damp again. Low in the 40s. I remember having a campfire. A friend and former riding partner of mine has a house in the park. She told me she's had snow in early September.

Don't forget $10 for the toll.

Will be leaving to go North around 5. As I pass through Knoxville I will shake my fist in the air in serious rebuke of @Velo Vol. That is my job. His job will be to reconsider his "Twitter problem".

Cheapskate's dilemma:

Start out early and cold, save $10/rider....or wait until it warms up and cough up $50 for the five of us.

I will take a vote and respect the majority. You KNOW my vote.

You sure they aren't going to get you if you come down while the booth is open? Personally, I would bring $10 just in case. Put it in the bag with your phone.

So the upcoming weekend in Lake Placid/Whiteface sounds like a bad Hollywood script: A group of four couples, all in their 50's spend the weekend in an old house in Lake Placid, accompanied by a younger female friend of one of the couples. She is a youthful blonde who has a reputation for walking around the house naked. None of the spouses are cyclists. Antics include animated debate about starting time for the assault on Whiteface Mountain, early/cold/cheap vs later/warm/pricey....and compact vs standard crankset gearing.

It's got Oscar written all over it!

I am told they don't stop you on the way out. So if we leave by 8 we get past the tollgate before 9. Of course I will have some $$ just in case.

This is the main reason that I'll go with bladed spokes on my next wheel build.

Yeah but how does she look? She could be youthful, blonde, nekkid and make you wish you hadn’t looked.

I don't know. I only know she is 40ish, blonde, a triathlete, single, and likes to walk around the house naked.
