Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've been wearing eyeglasses since I was about six years old. Nowadays, I let Mrs. rjones28 and the optician choose my frames. Subject to my veto.

I hate shopping for shoes because I'm hard to fit. Some shoes hurt my feet and I have to have at least size 13.

I've had more sets of pedals than shoes. Several sets of clips and straps, Mavic swiveling pedals, Shimano Look copies, 3 sets of Time pedals, (kept breaking) 3 sets of Look Delta pedals (the latch wears out) and 3 sets of SPD pedals. Also a few sets of SPD knock offs in the mix.

I'm reviewing the report from today's appointment with the witch doctor (the first one I've actually had with him, not a nurse, in more than a year):

Observations:

(1) I didn't think the consultation was particularly lengthy or complicated. I don't know how billing works, but this seems to me to be a justification to upgrade ($$) the coding. He repeated himself a lot and didn't offer a lot of other options.

(2) What was more complicated was the "aspiration" part. Now there's a euphemism. He was talking about how difficult I am as a patient, telling me that my last doctor must have mistakenly omitted me from her "problem patient" list when she left.

Then he just throws out the idea ("I'm brainstorming") of draining my knee and giving me a shot. wut No one ever talked about doing this before. After hee hawing around for a few minutes he said we should try it at least once, "to see what happens."

So I get on the table and he starts rummaging through some drawers, looking at almost-empty bottles. (There was an unnamed assistant sitting there for reasons I never determined, entering stuff into the computer). Finally he assembles his voodoo kit, smears ointments just above my knee, sprays on a freezing/numbing agent, and jams a huge syringe into my leg to extract "fluid."

After milking it out for a minute or so, he manages to suck out about 50 ml of "Mellow Yellow," as he affectionately called it.

After that I got to walk do the hall to the infusion room to have a needle stuck in my arm for over two hours. A delightful afternoon.

Where do I sign up for snake therapy?

Was the assistant unamed since birth or was the assistants name unknown to you but actually had a name?
reminds me of this classic.

I cannot say. Our only communication was regarding drug refills.

There are a couple of those places within a mile or so of us. I could get the mouse a hook.

I don't think your typical neigbourhood snake handler is properly trained in homeopathic medicine. You need to know exactly where to place the snake and stuff.

I have more bike shoes than plain shoes. Or pedestrian shoes. Or whatever those things are called.

I made some special holiday oatmeal cookies. Started out by simmering, then soaking raisins, dates, pecans, and walnuts in some bourbon...

Gunna try on some bontrager tomorrow, nobody carries the Fizik in my area but the price was pretty good on amazon so I havnt ruled those out yet.
Do you have wide-ish feet? Because this is a pretty good summary of how those brands work for me, too. At this rate, just cut your losses and get some Lakes.

In early December, my wife got a big tin of assorted cookies from her employer. That day, my kids decided that they wanted to split one of the cookies for their bedtime treat (their sweets intake is limited, usually to something small before they start getting ready for bed). My son went digging through the layers in the tin and pulled out a chocolate chip cookie, broke it in two and gave one half to his sister. They took bites simultaneously. My son exclaimed in disgust as soon as he realized that he'd grabbed an oatmeal raisin cookie by mistake. My daughter took a bite, started chewing and then silently retched twice. I had some momentary concern, I really thought that she was going to puke, but it was one of the more funny things I'd seen in a while.

I thought about taking a ride today, I'm just short of 5500 miles for the year and would like to cross that mark, but a quick test ride told me that it probably wouldn't be wise; we got another few inches today and it's deep enough that the studs aren't getting down to the ice/pavement, so it's pretty slippery. Maybe tomorrow.

Instead, I spent some time in the shop. I decided to work on a couple small projects as I get the feel for some of the new tools. Speaking of new tools, I've got a few more on way - should be fun.

If you bite into a chocolate chip cookie that is actually an oatmeal raisin cookie ...
