Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I never saw Top Gun, and am still aware of Kenny Loggins, though I can't tell you which of his songs goes with the movie.

Hope they're not talking about the calamari. Properly done (either real fast or real slow), it's fantastic. One of my favorite appetizers at places that do it right. I go for the tentacles, which I often find others avoid.

Done poorly, of course, it's clam-flavored inner tube.

She was also in some film called “Top Gun.” Never seen the entire thing myself. Heard they recently released a sequel.

Slept until 5, which is unusual. Had to remember it's Monday. Blah. Garmin says rest day, which is correct.

We use regular vegetable oil, but I suppose avacado oil is ok. You just need to make sure the oil does not have a low smoke point because you are practically deep frying the things.

Pro tip: really SQEEZE the water out of the potatoes after you grate them.

My mom is an AWFUL cook. I believe her mom was not especially good, either.

I believe on those rare occasions when she would cook latkes for us, she would use a store-bought dry mix that you combine with some water and eggs. Edible, but nowhere near as good as mine.

I may have to make some. My mom made them when I was young and my parents were poor. Looking back on my childhood, I now realize that my mom was a miracle worker in the kitchen with so little ingredients.

Brrr! Looks like the upcoming holiday weekend may make it prohibitively cold and/or unsafe (icy roads) to ride.

p.s. Caption Contest entry - "Snow Tires"

The NYT recipe is quite good, and if you have a decent food processor/shredder, it's pretty quick to make. I found the ideal cooking time to be more like 4 minutes per side rather than 5, but YMMV.

We are supposed to get a little bit on Thursday. I’m hoping that it won’t be so much that I can’t get my miles in over the weekend.

Those tires are actually pretty awful in any wet condition. They’re really supple, but the herringbone pattern has no grip.

We are supposed to get over an inch of rain on Thursday, then temps plummet to super-cold, which means risk of ice from frozen runoff is high. We actually had some icy spots on our rides this past weekend, which luckily we could dismount and walk across, but high risk of ice makes me a scaredy-cat.

We have pretty good road crews here. Not a lot of ice and where it’s icy, you can generally spot it far enough away. Most of the roads I ride in the winter are pretty empty, which helps a ton.

Lucky. My winter riding is terribly impacted by ice/runoff. The problem is the roads are "clear enough" for cars, but typically there is runoff from driveways that cause random icy patches, and they are not always visible. I had a nasty crash on frozen runoff about 8 years ago, and since then I am extra cautious.

I see fake miles in my future.
