Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Kid was out for 24ish. Able to bunk with friends though.

Woke up at 3 and went back to sleep, and no nightmares unlike usually when going back to sleep at that hour. AND slept until 540. Had the TV and laptop on super-dim last night. Thinking the light is a thing. Need to try some blue-blockers.

I saw the carnage on the news, some major highway somewhere littered with overturned big rigs on the shoulders and the median. Looked like a war zone.

One of the projects that is supposed to start next month is a rehabilitation of the spillway, so we needed to find out how much water needed to be drained from the reservoir in order to dry the spillway for rework.

We took height of the base of this trench using our GPS equipment as well as measurements of the current water height in the trench.

The reservoir will need to be lowered by about 15 feet in order to do the work.

Too bad we can't send all that water out West.
Interesting stuff, thank you!

Did you park on your front porch rocking chair for the evening and bask in the -10F awesomeness? Chat with the neighbour?

Fake miles accomplished. I do hope to get some real miles tomorrow as the cold snap is supposed to be brief.

Wish we'd gotten out over the summer while the getting was good. Better late than never.

Well, out Nest thermostat died last night. Woke up this morning and went downstairs to let the dogs out and it was 52* downstairs. The Nest kept saying there was no power coming from the wall. I tried to charge it via USB and that went nowhere. It’s in some sort of update loop that isn’t working. Went to Ace and bought a “dumb” thermostat for $30 and installed it just now.

I’m beyond pissed. The Nest is on an interior wall. It’s not like it’s on an uninsulated wall and it was working when we went to bed last night because I put it on 68* (normally goes to 64* at night). The other thermostats upstairs and in the basement are programmable (not Nests) and are working perfectly fine.

I found this this article and am thinking Nests just suck in cold weather:

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/14/f...re-freeze.html

I imagine people in Minnesota and Alaska and Canada have them, so I doubt they really suck in cold climes.

I can confirm, Genejocky most likely will not be riding outside today.

Gross.

Guy on a bike was hit by a car yesterday, on one of the roads I frequent. 1142 am, no helmet. Died at the scene.

Stay safe out there.

I suppose I must have posted something about it last night. I just don't remember.

And in actuality, I think I am going to ride today, since I set aside the time for it. I just won't take any of my old steel bikes.

Was there last night, and was gross when I left this morning. My attempt at humor. I won’t start a career as a comedian.

Ah!
It's a little drier this morning. Road's still wet though.
