Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I wouldn't know a fancy dawg from a regular dog if it peed on my leg, or couch

So can a steel bike be squeaky?

I ride the ritchey again today, and the metallic clicking noise came back. It came back 2 days ago actually.

While I was riding I tried to figure out what it was and more I listened to it the more I realized it’s a metal creak/ creak sound. While riding if I shake the bike I can hear it increase in frequency.

Everything is tight, So could it just be the bike?

Picked up the emonda today, wheel is fixed, fork is ugly but trimmed, cables were cleaned up.

Madone is still in the shop. The front brake was messed up, Again, always been that way, just figured it was a sram thing. Always has been super squishy, and the brake lever never bounced back with gusto.

Ordered a seat post clamp for the El Diablo AKA 5200. Which I am still questioning what it is. It’s obviously a 5000 series trek, and has to be 2000 or newer because of the steerer tube. I just wish I knew which one and which year, also the size would be nice.

I found a vintage trek website last night, listed the specifications for each model and each year, had a picture as well but none matched my paint job.

Bontrager pro stem should be here this week. 120 mm 17 degrees of drop. Throwing that on the el diablo.

I'm bored at work right now. Post a pic of your Trek again, and I'll poke around and see if I can find something.

Is that the real reason?

The issue with stickers is finding one truly worth being placed on my bike.

The fork also appears to be a replacement. The fork has the shape of the 2003+ models, but the frame could be older than that. I don't know if there's a way to check Trek serial numbers, but that might be your best bet for positive ID.

EDIT: The protective plate on the drive side chainstay indicates that the frame is 2003+.

The good thing about stickers is that you can cover the dings, and when you find a better one you can change.

the tail end of my 1992 5200 ... lunar (purple) or something like that

went full weight weenie on it ... Nuke Proof hubs, XTR ti freehub, SRP ti cogs ... DT Rev spokes ... WC ti BB ... Dean ti post, Flite saddle, Syncros stem ... etc

got it in 1993 or 1994 (?) - Trek had excess inventory of the 5200 and 5500 in the smaller sizes and was blowing them out

unfortunately been sitting in that spot for over 20 years

Thanks, the paint on the frame is peeling, I just thought that it was old, but I think you are right I think it was painted. The fork is after market, The shop confirmed that, I guess the fork that is on it wasn’t even made then.

Serial number is gone, but they did keep the MADE IN USA sticker. I think the only difference between the 5000-5900 was the components. Frame wise, I think they were all made the same.

Theres a 2004 54 for sale down the street from me for 400 bucks. I wish it was a 56 or a 58

The rear triangle looks more slack, not sure if that’s WSD related or a different year.

They're apparently very popular where I grew up in Southern PA, but since my family wasn't from there, I never heard about them till years after I moved away.

I suspect that the USA sticker is also a replacement, just like the Trek stickers.

5000, 5200, and 5500 were OCLV 120. The 5900 was made from the lighter OCLV 110 material. Dimensions were the same, I believe (except for the WSD models).

I have urges to build a hot flat-bar bar bike from an OCLV frame, but I really don't have any use for that kind of bike. I just want to have one.

Fell for a scam today and I am pretty pissed off at myself over it. I was in target and pushing Simon around in a stroller and a teenager approached me with a clip board. At first I thought he worked at target. He tried to speak and was using hand signals, he handed me the clip board, and I saw that it was something for deaf and mute kids, asking for a donation. It caught me by surprise and I ended up giving him 10 dollars. After he walked away I felt like something was fishy. While we were driving away, I saw him come out of the target with another teenager and guess what he was talking. I wanted to confront him but Simon was screaming and I would have to tell Mrs Bam I am an idiot.

Way better choice to post it on a public discussion forum.

almost got a 5500 - but decided on the purple 5200 ... I did (eventually) put a Dura Ace crank on the 5200
