Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Let's see if I can finish this ride.

531, what they've started building new roads now? You lot are worse than Athens.

Absolutely. Dean is currently stocking GT and Scott, with Bianchi models to arrive soon. Not sure about track though, I'm trying to talk him into keeping at least one bike there.

Yeah, I keep using B&S. Just seems easier somehow.

Maaaaate... track is on fire this season with almost double the numbers from last year every meet. If your lad had any sense he would establish himself as THE track specialist shop on the coast and maintain it. If he were an entrepreneur he would keep the shop open a little longer on track nite, then accidentally roll up at Adcock Park with catalogues, trick bits, and a good spiel.

Thanks for the advice pshaw... I reckon it'd be a bloody boring way to race as well. There were a few there at the finish that were attacking through the race, them's the guys I want to sit with. Also, not knowing how to train for these races, I reckon doing as many as possible near the front should work.

Anyone got any tips for an uphill TT?
We've got one on tomorrow. 6.8km 5% (average) gradient. It's a pretty popular hill, I've ridden it quite a few times, and I know I'm pretty ****e on it.
The only real plan I have is to go out a bit easier than I usually do and not blow up 3/4 of the way up.

Yep. Not a real flash one but it does the basics.

Odin, taking it steady early sounds like a good plan, but not too slow. And remember that most blow-ups are in the mind. So take the pain, soldier. Take the pain.

Hey guys I need a little help with pedals. Again crappy plastic pedals have failed me badly, and finding a decent pedal toe clip for me is exceedingly difficult -not everyone must ride clipless.
Looking at a couple of options:
1. EbayShimano pedals and toe clips Looks like vintage hunters want these pedals though. Used kinda scares me to put on a bike Ill be riding everyday.

2. Something I found on performance bike Winwood Instep Pedals and buying a set of Look Pedals. A few reservations though, will these actually work and be comfortable?

I dont want to go fully clipless as of yet because Ill look like a tool at uni taking the cycling shoes off to put thongs on. (not that I ride in thongs)

Thanks for your help on a stupid and mundane topic

There are no stupid and mundane topics here, just discussion.
Mate, bite the bullit and go clipless but go SPD and you can walk in the shoes. Look for something like these;
https://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-240-GRAM-SUP...QQcmdZViewItem
I have them on my commutor and they are great. Easy to get in and out of and as I said, you can walk in the shoes which come in many different styles including joggers or even sandles.

in my noobness I take it SPD are the mountainbike style clips/shoes?

I thinkk your right I talked/looked at a couple of LBS's this morning and they have no decent/reasonable toeclip pedals, just cheap stuff.

I had a look at cleats/shoes in Hadleys (where Expat used to work) helpful, and cleats seem to be the way to go. Although I would take a pair of thongs with me and put the shoes in me bag

Yep, I'll go along with berny on the SPD. I've got something similar to these for my MTB commuter, and I sometimes wear 'em all day at work... very comfy.

better to buy the pedals off ebay and the shoes at a LBS?

EDIT: also whats float? I take its an amount of freeplay allowed either up and and down or side to side

A little bit of sideways movement to help align the foot with the pedal designed to keep knee stress to a minimum.

Float is a wan kerism introduced by triathletes who didn't know how to set up their cleats properly. Now just about everybody uses cleats with float 'to save their knees' when what they really need is a pair of black cleats and 30 minutes of patient (and correct) fitting.

Anyways, I have two pedal solutions for you:

No name brand pedals with plastic clips and leather toestraps - cost $0.00. Two sets of slotted cleats thrown in as well.

Or

Almost brand new look pedals (black) from my race bike, done <1000km. $160RRP, yours for $80 if you want them. Let pedal has a nice 1cm gouge where I clipped it in a race two weeks ago. Right pedal has scratches on the side from bike being blown over (twice). Nice pedals, but I'm standardising on one model (VP-R70 for those playing at home) across all my bikes. I might have a set of red cleats (float) lying around somewhere that I can throw in as well.

aaargghh the bloke at hadleys (correct me if im wrong) said look cleats wont fit the recessed cleat style shoe which is going to p*ss me off having to change footwear everywhere I go.

But I get your idea either I can go for bad platform pedals or something decent. Mate if Im wrong about the pedals I will seriously consider buying them off ya

You don't need correctin'. If you wanna walk around like a normal human bean then steer clear of anything remotely like a slotted or Look style cleat.

And for ease of use, stick to one pedal, one cleat system, one shoe across everything.
