Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Crushed granite. What we've yet to realise here in Australia because we're so backward, is that if you get a stack of people riding a completely 'natural' track, it's actually not sustainable. Very quickly you start to run into run-off and errosion problems, and as we don't have the infrastructure nor the volunteer base (when was the last time any of us did any trail maintenance?), very soon (or not, as the case my be) you have an environmental disaster area.

I wish the gromits and freeride idiots woke up and realised that. It's a real bone-of-contention with me.

Anyway, the Lysterfield track is designed to be sustainable. It has swales, run-off trenches, and crushed granite in the high wear areas. It's not a pristine virgin singletrack adventure, but it's still a fun track in some nice bush that's definitely worth riding. Its only a part of a wider trail network too, which is another bonus.

3 million bucks well spent, I reckon.

Sorry, that's what you get when you're married to a Landscape Architect! You absorb all storts of stuff normal people wouldn't give two sh¡ts about.

A swale is like a drain that's designed to naturally disperse rainwater run-off. Or something to that effect.

Kind of.....it's still reminiscent of a decrepit old gymnasium, but the sound system is now awesome. The bass during "Golddigger" was incredible. Was about 60 degrees in the licenced floor section...I was sweatier than Robbie during the Athens road race.

I hadn't been there since Ice Cube in about 1994!!! It's certainly better than it was back then...

Are you trying to say that the "House of Stoush" is not in pristine condition?

Bikes: Wilier, Alchemy, Merida MTB,

So...who's gunna head in for a look at the Comm Games RR on Sunday?

Punt Rd hill looks like a good spot for some action, or maybe Anderson St. there are a couple of technical turns down near the Yarra too that might sort out who can handle a bike & who cant.

I haven't been there since Billy Idol in about 1987 (free ticket, I promise ), and it looked like an oversized barn back then. It think there might've even been sawdust on the floor and cobwebs hanging from the ceiling

Odin, take a picnic and a bat and ball for the kids if they are into that, and park yourself in the gardens. Atleast the wife won't resent you unless you take off to punt road for 10 laps
