Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You must be very young Odin.

The quote is "How's the serenity?" juxtaposed by roaring outboard in the next scene. irony at its very best.

has anyone managed to get their grubby mits on the SRAM force group set yet or know anyone that has? im not a huge SRAM fan (im quite happy with shimano on both MTB and road) just wondering how its being recieved. SRAM seems to get a bit of the campag mentality on the MTB scence as its an alternative + more expensive compared to shimano therefore automoaticly " better "

Apparently it's going to be available sometime in September according to the incredibly helpful and supportive local wholesaler. I wanted a group for my next roadie but the wholesaler here said "It's going to be about 3 grand, and most of our allotted sets are already sold out."

Is there any wonder I don't buy anything here? Hrm, will I get Record for 1600 bucks, or wait for the Force stuff and get reamed for 3000? Hrm, tough decision, let me think about it....

for XC or downhill? the only one i know of for XC is lane cove nat park. but thats doesnt make it good.....

if your adventurous ( andnot affraid of walkers or rangers) if you go into lane cove nat you can hit the walking trailswhich is pretty sketchy and techy. otherwise its just walking trails.

other than that there is davidson/cascades at st ives which is good fun , lots of waterbars etc but 90% fire road. good 8 - 10 min climb in there which is an absolute blast comming back down.

I am asking because a friend of ours wants to change the suspension fork for a rigid fork and has been told by his LBS that it can't be done because of the combination of V-brakes, 700C wheels and stem size.

Asked the question at our LBS and he said that stems commonly come in 1" or 1 1/8" - he was pretty sure Treks had 1 1/8" stems.

Which would mean it is entirely possible to replace the Trek suspension fork with a rigid one because other bikes use the V-brake/700C wheel/1 1/8" stem combo. Unless Treks have some bizarre proprietary setup which means you can't use aftermarket forks.
matagi, you can certainly change it our for rigid. The LBS must not have a clue.

What they are probably worried about is axle to crown length. If the rigid fork does not match the suspension fork in this measurement, it will change the head angle of the bike. What rigid forks are available in 700cc ?

Plenty of cross forks w/canti posts on them, carbon or Alu. Not sure if the steering will end up real quick though due to the axle to crown height you mention. Kinesis would prob have one.

Finding an aftermarket 700c suspension corrected rigid fork is going to be a stretch. That's the only logisical issue. I think Surly makes one that probably weighs as much as the suspension fork, that's the only one I can think of at the moment.

Fark, looks like the server that hosts my shiet is down. Fabulous.

that's nothin'!! i've even started building my own wheels!

seems to be a common theme.....

I saw a mate on Beach Rd. the other night, and I said to him, "I just built these wheels I'm riding."
He replied: "wow, you DEFINITELY have too much time on your hands."

ok well the entries to lane cove national park that i know of on my side of the sticks are 1) epping - 2 entries : 1 on Derby Street ( which has single track , this is the one i take on my way to work) and one further down on Boundary rd, which is straight onto fire trail. either of these can take you to pennant hills up a nice climb, or you can head back towards browns water hole / yanko road north ryde. ive never been able to work out which exit is which on the north ryde side as ive never exited there.

you could make a pretty good ride out of this. just beware of the cranky magpie in spring whose taken chunks out of my helmet the past couple of years. hes a mean bastid who takes great pleasure at hamering you ( hit my hard enough to knock me off once) when going up hill!

otherwise, you could ride down epping road to epping then hit the trail back from there to north ryde, i come out at marsfield / browns water hole and the whole shebang takes a tad over 1/2 hour in one direction.

how i do it , and by no means cannon but : out of the saddle, favoured foot fwd, relax, look about 5 - 6 ft infront at the ground, feather the brakes if you need to due to slope. much easier on an uphill than a downhill.

What HDT sed. Practice over and over and over and over....

I was on a ride with the Peleton gang and Nate pulled up at the lights doing a beautiful track stand for about a minute. Temptation got the better of me and I gave him a big shove. Bastard didn't even move, let alone unclip. He just smiled and rode away when the lights turned green. I hate ppl like that

The other issue is V brake posts lining up with 700C wheels.
