Been and done it already, 90ks of an hour up tempo then the group picked up the old codgers and dragged them up and down the beach at a strict 30kmh before we hammered back through the hills to town for a coffee.

Now it's out to trim the edges and mow the lawn

Bugger! Had me first flat in something like 6 months today... just happened to be two thirds of the way through a RR. :(
I found and patched the leak pretty quickly (left the wheel on) and proceeded to pump it up with my Crank Bros mini pump (the one I'd taken back cos I thought it was a POS, the lbs stripped it, reassembled and said it was fine)
It ain't f******g fine! I reckon I pumped fer 5 minutes solid - bloody arm was siezing up but no friggin air was going in. Then after giving it up as a bad joke, it wouldn't release the valve.
The only way was to really reef on the thing... tearing the stem orf of course.
Hope the cows find a use fer it - cos I launched it into a paddock.
Do you guys use frame pumps or co2?

= grrr!!

jock 05-13-06 04:27 AM

I have a decent sized mini-pump that can put out a decent 120psi. Unfortunately my shoulders can only push it to 90psi on a good day, so I lean the valve end of the pump against a rock or something in order to get max pressure in without shearing off the presta valve (or my girly shoulders*!!).

With the broken collarbone I'd be lucky to pump 50psi in, so I'm now the proud owner of a CO2 cartridge kit. Hope it works, otherwise I'll be flagging cagers down for help

This looks ultra-cool: http://www.zorinpump.com/

But then again, I have had lotsa beer :D

*there's no way I can argue against any claims of blatant sexism, breaches of EEO, or similar. But the fact that I have girly shoulders remains, so just get over it.

A woman who can set tappet clearances...I think I'm in love:)

I went for a spin down to Mt Eliza this morning. Loved the ride, but I think I'm getting angry in my old age. After having some dude sit on my wheel for 15K's I turned around and told him to either do some work or F... off. He wasn't happy and eventually tagged onto a group of guys who overtook us. Does this annoy anyone else or am I being unreasonable?

Evening Wattsy, like you it shyts me  I could go on but there's beer to be drunk :D

Yeah, one bloke I spoke to after the race likes co2 while another likes frame pumps... didn't get too many opinions cos every bugger had just about nicked orf by the time I got back - got a lift with the bloke who puts out the "Road Race in progress" signs.
...mumble mumble POS pump...

That pump looks cool jock, wonder if there's a carbon aero one :D

I use a frame pump branded GIYO thats long and thin rather than short and fat that cost me about $30 and it works great. I've never had any problems with mine. It only works with Presta? valves (long skinny ones with lock nuts) though.

Regards, Anthony

Slow down to 23kph, say hello, and wait for him to get bored and overtake, then sit on his wheel.

Isn't that the usual proceedure?

My LBS has these in stock http://www.topeak.com/2006/products/...rorocketcb.php
reckons they are pretty good? I'm thinking of investing as my old mtb pump has seen better days.
that and the fact I keep forgetting to swap it between seat bag and camelbak.
Still, you know us Scots, every penny is a prisoner, I dont see why I should have to pay to put air in my tyres, air is still free as far as I can tell? :p

Free air? Not if Johnny can help it ;)
Nice looking pump but I was starting to look at something a bit more extreme like a Topeak Road Morph.
I'd like to see one IRL though... it might be like carrying me floor pump around.
Been looking at co2 and it looks like it'd be good fer racing - nice 'n' quick but at $9 a canister, it could get very exy as an everyday thing.

If you do get to see one, I would be interested in your opinion. Nobody around here carries one. :(
Looking at the specs on the website, it seems to be shorter than a frame pump. I'm a bit curious about the width of 5.7cm (unless they mean with the foot out). That would make it less attractive to me, 'coz I mount my pump on my frame (current pump Zefal-HPX, but my not-so-puny girly muscles can't get it much above 85-90psi)

Not keen on CO2 personally 'coz of the environmental implications (disposable canister)

what about the actual carbon dioxide? ;)

HDTVKSS 05-13-06 07:30 PM

i had a wrench force C02 with gauge that i originally used, buti could never get more than 70 odd psi out of it. have bought a Co2 gas thingameboby that i carry ( and also a pump just in case i get more than 1 flat.) for the race yesterday i just carried then co2 bomb as i figured it was only a 12.5 k walk at worst case. ironicly ive never had to use it, so i cant tell you how well it works.

for MTB i dont tend to carry a pump or spare in a race as i run tubless and also cant tollerate carrying a backpack. when i ride i generally carry a small pump and a couple of spare tyres.

speaking of racing at Calga i picked up a 2nd in a sprint after a woeful display of group riding, fell off the back at least 4 times due to not paying attention or being in the wrong place when a break went off the front. so i am now the worlds leading expert at bridging a gap!! thought id burnt too many matches but all turned out ok in the end.

looks like the pace was slow as we went like an hour and a half. not to worry, lots of things learnt and lots to still learn. looking fwd to next time. its funny how you start with a big group, then by 1/4 way its down to 6, then you look around its 5 then somehow up the final time up blood theres only 3. very different to a MTB race where i just try and go hard off the gun and break the opposition. that 13 year old was a power house, quite impressive for somone of his age, look out for him when he gets a little older and puts some muscle on. Also the guy that won deserved it, seeing as he pulled for most of the way, he should kick some ass in C grade.

hay Jocko, wheresmy pump!!??!! :p happy b'day to jock jnr as well :)

You're joking, right?

Jock, you still have that pump!

jock 05-13-06 07:47 PM

It's not like I work for FedEx or anything you know!

I prefer to move at a more appreciable pace, something akin to Australia Post on a bad day.
