thought this pic was interesting. i take it thats soem sort of add on on the front wheel ot make it into a half disk?

are they allowed to run disk wheels on each end? seems lik eyou never see it. i imagine it would make it a bastard to turn.

Thylacine 05-18-06 08:59 PM

That's interesting. A super big hub. Probably increases spoke triangulation and makes for a really strong front wheel. Probably slightly more aero too while dodging the UCI rules.

pshaw 05-18-06 09:06 PM

Didn't the big Jan run a wheel back to front in last years TDF?

was he hungover from the night before?

Thylacine 05-18-06 09:38 PM

Well, just because you're a bike mechanic doesn't mean you know about aerodynamics

HDTVKSS 05-18-06 09:56 PM

woudlnt make thatmuch difference would it? the zipps are dimpled like golf balls, but i cant see how that would make a huge ( read over a few seconds) difference, he lost by a lost by a lot more than that

I just remember a pic of Jans bike and someone spotted his bladed wheel was on the worng way... think it was up for debate...

Question:
Why do most pros in TTs use a disc rear instead of a disc front? (ie bladed/spoke rear, disc front)

2 discs (or even just disc front) = very hard to control outside of an enclosed velodrome, crosswinds etc. Plus there is a slight gyro effect that makes them a bit hard toget around corners.

Speaking of disc wheels, did you guys see the weights of some of the pro track bikes?

I've been shoving it up the weight weenies ever since. I've gotta admit I was shocked to see a 19 and 20lb track bikes

Damian Zielinski's Isaac.............16.3 lb
Clara Sanchez' Look...................17.0 lb
Roberto Chiappa's Pinarello.......17.3 lb
Maximilian Levy's FES.................17.4 lb
Theo Bos' Koga/BT.....................17.5 lb
Dutch team pursuit Koga/BT.......17.8 lb
Stefan Nimke's FES.....................17.9 lb
Tuen Mulder's Koga/BT...............18.5 lb
Dutch team pursuit Koga/BT.......19.2 lb
Dutch team pursuit Koga/BT.......19.4 lb
Dutch team pursuit Koga/BT.......20.7 lb

Weight not an issue when there are no hills and you train all day every day for acceleration...

HDTVKSS 05-18-06 11:00 PM

could even play slightly to your adv via momentum in an event like team pursuit if you were 2nd + to take a pull

Thylacine 05-18-06 11:23 PM

There's no point at having a light track bike. There's no hills, no bumps, no potholes, no turns, no crosswinds etc etc. The only thing that matters are pure stiffness and aerodynamics.

Crap I'm tired. How long til I can finish off the Monteiths in the fridge?

Wilchemy 05-18-06 11:25 PM

I would think some of the track monsters (ie Sean Eadie & the like) would snap anything too lightweight.

Too right!

Any amount of rolling momentum you can eke out while trying to stay at 65kmh can only benefit.

climbo 05-19-06 12:29 AM

ya, hence the hour record bloke who had a 3kg rear wheel or whatever it was, once he got that thing rolling he probably just stopped pedalling. :)

pshaw 05-19-06 12:46 AM

I think the guy who set the latest hour record was using quite a heavy bike and wheels in particular. Something about heavy rotating mass and momentum etc.
*grabs a beer. It is Friday and my ears hurt from screaming kid :(

That would be right. Stevo never raced as a senior amatuer. He had a pro licence at 16.

Friday takeaways and 1/2 bottle of merlot despatched, Glenmorangie in hand, Hurricanes vs Waratahs on TV, no screaming kids (no kids) and I'll be out on the bike at 7am for a loosener before doing the 24km road bike leg of a multisport event on Sunday.

Go the Hurricanes!

jock 05-19-06 02:45 AM

I'm starting to get sick of this clap. Wife is gonna chuck a hissy fit if I go out for a ride because one of her school-mum friends used to be a physio in a younger life and keeps putting horror stories in her head. Grrrrr.

<-- now 4kg+ heavier in just 5 weeks due to savage aversion to the stationary trainer thingy.
