Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't have every bike. But there are currently about a dozen of them in a storage unit across town.

I had one briefly but it was lowly Mirage 8sp.

I do enjoy running 9sp or 10sp Shimano on roadies and subbing in 10sp Record cranks and BBs tho.

I think I've had 15 bicycles as an adult and have 3 now. I can remember what I did with most of them but for some reason not the Trek hardtail I had in the early 90s.
I know what happened to the mountain bikes before and after that Trek, but that one is a blank.

Thrifty morning update, with cycling content:

We have an outside water spigot on the North side of the house. The handle broke years ago, and we don't use it much. You can still use a pliers to turn the water on/off, but apparently the handle that this was designed for is OLD OLD OLD (like from the 1970's), and they don't make them anymore. A few years ago mrs datlas asked a plumber to give an estimate for fixing this and he said something ridiculous like $500. I went to Home Depot and got a newer style handle (which does not quite fit) and a longer size screw and was able to "hack" the thing on with a locknut so it works now and only cost about $4 for the parts.

Next, the Toyota apparently needs a new cabin air filter. The dealer said it's $120. I bought the filter for $25 and took the 3 minutes to replace it.

So I somehow saved us about $600 today. I think I should use this as an excuse to buy $600 in bike schwag.

I think this reasoning makes sense, but the MOF may not see it that way.

The only one I have had is my Seven with Chorus 10 speed. I really like the fit and feel of the levers. The rest of it is ok. I have put about 70K miles on it. Broke the front derailleur once, shift lever return springs one time each, had BB bearings get crunchy, freehub body bearings once. Cracked a Fulcrum crank that I had bought new when I took the Chorus standard off to get the compact. Found a used Chorus compact after that.

The wheels with the Record hubs have only been on it for part of the time. Came (used) with some sharp looking Cole wheels and when the freehub broke I bought a set of Ksyrium something wheel which had failures of the spoke nipples pulling through the rims. After three rear rim replacements I switched to Open Pro rims with Record hubs. Rear rims last about 10K miles with these.

Correct. Dawn Wells was also an interesting person. Fun fact: She represented Nevada in the Miss America Pageant in 1954, IIRC, and she and Russell Johnson, who played the professor, remained good friend until he died of prostate cancer. Tina Louise, who played Ginger, is the only living cast member.

I saw Wells at the Philly indoor boat show back in the '90s. She was there hawking and signing a cookbook she had published.

2 Great Great Grandfathers fought in the Civil War. One in the Army, one in the Navy - I guess you could call it the "Brown Water Navy", because they were active on the Big Muddy.

When I was young boy*, I read in Bicycling magazine about the magical Campagnolo components, but they were not something I had any access to. The nearest bike shop that I knew of was in Hanover, and I could only occasionally convince my Mom to drive me there. I got a couple things there, like those "turkey wing" brake levers, because there weren't other guys with 10 speeds to show me how to take advantage of drop bars.

Eventually, I built up an Italian steel frame, made of Columbus tubes, with Campagnolo components. It wasn't better than my American bike made of Japanese steel with Shimano components, but it was different.

*(I played the silver ball)

Compensatory Cashflow, specifically the Alice Trillin Theory of Compensatory Cashflow, described by Calvin Trillin in one of his books.

It works like this - if you ever considered, even only briefly, buying something, and then didn't, you now have that amount available for other things. For example, "We have that $500 we saved by not buying that fancy TV,"
