Agree. That said, some cyclists seem more motivated by “winning” or some sort of performance metric. One of the guys on the Saturday ride is like that. We had a good ride yesterday. Today was a social recovery ride. I encouraged him to join but he insisted he had to do his “recovery/zone 2 ride” on his trainer. We had a sunny and fun ride, which was 100% joy (for me) but clearly we are all wired a little differently.

There are some times when I look forward to the Sunday ride so much that I get the bike prepped early Saturday, and I'll find myself daydreaming about it all day. Then there are times when I feel blah, and it takes some actual willpower to get kitted up and get going. But no matter how I've felt before the ride, it's really rare for me to not find myself enjoying it once I'm out on the road.
I imagine with overtraining, every ride requires willpower and then you don't really enjoy it. Maybe like days I've had when I felt subpar before the ride to such an extent that I questioned whether it was a good idea to ride. Generally that feeling goes away within the first couple miles, but one day it was 20 miles before I really felt good.

NASCAR goes to Watkins Glen next week. rjones28 is probably busy filling his cooler full of beer and sandwiches.

Tore my fence down a month ago. Was supposed to put the new one up immediately but lowe’s lost my order. So now I have zero time off to get it up. Not a huge rush, just need it up before August. Duke Ka Boom is coming.

Used to be 34 miles was a warm up. I state that, because I would do 34 miles on the way to the group ride. I don’t remember really eating much during my riding back then. All I ever had was water and I always felt fine. 34 miles now and I am done. That’s at zone 1-2
too which is even more frustrating. I’m not blasting away, havnt been for awhile.

For me, "training" is a seasonal thing. I use quotes deliberately since "training" is a loosely-defined thing that is a product of both one's actions and their mentality towards it.
I force the issue (RE: training) for half of the year at most, it just gets a little tiring after a while. But like most here, I love the simple act of pedaling a bicycle, so that keeps me in somewhat decent cycling shape year round. Staying lean and otherwise active & healthy is big too.
I see a lot of guys get too attached to winning and/or performing at some level, whether that level is part of that individual's highlight real in physicality (so to speak) or some objective line in the sand. Winning and having top physical performances are fleeting things for most of us. It can be hard but you need to scale your expectations with the energy you have to put into it. And most of all - you have to enjoy the journey.
