I looked at Trek bikes last summer when I was contemplating getting back into cycling but then decided to go with Felt. I've since ditched the Felt for a used LOOK CF bike and I have a steel LeMond Zurich as well.

actually the name TREK is from the Afrikaans
as in voortreker. Go back and read the history of Trek,
Bevel Hogg and Richard Burke came up with the name.
Hogg (south african) originally chose "Kestrel", Burke
chose Intrepid, they settled on Trek due to it's being internationally
recognizable.

If you don't like Trek don't buy one. It's just that simple and I won't degrade your choice and
hope you keep your opinion of my choice to yourself if we happen to meet on the road or trail.

I have a Trek 1000 and the only thing I ever had a problem with was the rear wheel; due to my weight, I kept popping spokes, after replacing the wheels all is well again. I like my Trek 1000, it is a great entry level bike and I think it is so cool to ride with guys on the $2000 bikes and crush them when all I paid was $550 for mine.
In my opinion, Trek makes a great bike, people I have ridden with love the way their madones handle and I do not here to many complaints against any of the other Treks I see on the road either. I do think they are overpriced, (I guess they are still riding the Lance wave).
I plan to buy myself a Cannondale R800 or better (CAAD 8 frame) as present to myself after I drop my weight under 200 pounds. I think Cannondale bikes are every bit as good as the Trek, Cannondale bikes they are just better priced. I think the Cannondale R1000 is a great deal, I do not think Trek can currently match.

My first "racing" road bike was a Trek 400 - 1989 model, downtube shifters, biopace ring... I loved it. I miss it. My first MTB was a Trek, my second is a Trek (though it's nowhere near as nice as the first one). My current road bike is a Specialized, which I love. It's a joy to ride (except for the Alex wheelset, which I'm convinced is made of paper mache and duct tape - the new wheels are coming this week).
I have to say that I don't dislike Trek. I like Trek a lot, actually, but I've sort of... fallen out of love with them. I dunno, maybe it was just a thing. But I don't get excited by the thought of a new Trek. A Lemond, maybe. A Cervelo, you betchya. A Specialized S-Works Tarmac? Drool. A Mercx? Oh yes. But the Madone? Yes, it's a great bike. But I'm just not all that into it. Sorry, Trek. Really... it's me, not you. I'm sure we'll stay good friends.

I refuse to pay $10,000 for a non-custom gimmick bike.
That's why.

Wouldn't you scoff at a $400,000 Ford Taurus?

So, to paraphrase Yogi Berra, Treks are so popular nobody buys them anymore.
And now Trek has their own track bike, the T1. This will further spoil the fun of the true fixie riders as all the train-jumping hipsters will be down at the coffee shop with their Treks.
I have nothing against Trek; they make great bicycles. I 've got a Trek Fuel 80, bought my wife a Trek hybrid then a 7.5FX. Test rode the 1000 and 1500 and they didn't feel right so I bought the Orbea. LBS has great service, too.
When I'm ready to pull the trigger on another bicycle I'll see what Trek has to offer, along with all the other brands for sale in town.

I certainly wouldn't buy a Taurus for $400k, and from the sounds of it neither would you. But if they can sell them at that price to other people, more power to them. Welcome to capitalist America.

But on the other side of the coin, what about the $400,000 Ferrari that didn't perform any better than the Taurus? It just had a fancy, exclusive-sounding name. Would any of us scoff at that?

I can't respect a company that gouges customers like that.

<Take this toungue in cheek>I wouldn't scoff if it was the same Ford used in a Nascar event. I can't remember for sure but I believe that a good new chassis for use in Nascar was somewhere in the neighborhood of $400,000...thats sans engine, drivetrain, etc....
Based on that I'd call the ratios just about right.

the steerer tube just came apart and sheared off right under the stem.
now THAT is Trek Professional Kwality

A Trek wins the DTF 7 years running and Trek is ___________ .
The fork head snapping could have happened on any previously crashed bike and 7 TDF's have nothing to do w/ Trek either.

Bike=car analogies never work, and they invariably degenerate threads into expensive car image posting marathons, which ironically enough IS analogous to penis envy. Stop the madness. Oh, and Cypress sucks.
