Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Then he simply didn't know how to do it. A patch like the one I show would strengthen the bottom of the original split and prevent it from splitting again. By moving the weak point up closer to the top of the seat tube and closer to the clamp you stiffen the whole setup.

I agree ,it should be gusseted , split a 1--2 inch length of ally.tube length ways &slide it over the end of the seat tube before replacing the seat post &clamp ,that should give it a bit of strength without subjecting it to anymore heat.Make sure the split in the gusset tube does'nt close up before the clamp tightens on the seat post. You could even epoxy bond it on once you got it fitting sweet. Are you sure that you have the right dia. seat post ? if it is slightly undersize it would cause the original prob.

50 bucks

Fess up. Who inflicted that upon your frame? I'm afraid I must concur with the fellas on this one. It'll probably last a week. Sorry dude.

Caught the train on sunday with the bike, to greenwood ,got rained in till this morning, caught the train home got sligtly wet. Watched the movie SAW, a total head bender, directed and acted by a couple of aussies .
I gotta say im glad the goverment took over the perrylakes project, now they got to find some dollars for coaches, a couple athletic champions coming through and coaches thin on the ground.
What number are you wearing for the new "force" rugby team?

I'm actually leaving Perth in about 6 weeks so I won't be seeing the force except on TV for a few years.

My bikes will have to be stored for a while unfortunately.

Perry Lakes should become the new rugby ground.

In the west to day, there has been an agreemnt to use subi oval for rugby and football, though subi oval isn't set up for large crowds ,belmont park is another option for international games.Perrylakes needs a train spir line to supply transport to make sure the facility gets fully utilized.
acouple of years? why not sell the bikes and by somthing overseas, unless there going to be well looked after here ?

Subi oval is rubbish to watch rugby at. Perry Lakes would be ideal because it's in the Western Suburbs which is rugby union territory ie middle/upper class.

They're supposed to play at Members Equity stadium in a couple of years.

I got my Pinarello for a good price and I don't need the money it would bring so I want to keep it. My Avanti wouldn't be worth much and my wife wants to keep her bike because she likes it.

If I get a good job overseas I'll visit Milan and get a bike custom made (or at least fitted) at one of the factories over there - hopefully Pinarello, but they're all pretty good.

I use a ø31.8 seat tube, and custom machine up an insert that gets press-fit into the top of the seat tube. That part is then seam welded and the top tube covers half of it. It's indestructo.

The problem with that area is that the wall thickness of the tube in that section is too thin, and it usually ovalises during welding meaning that when you stick the seat post in (which differ in size wildly from model to model, BTW) the fit is awful. It usually means you have to reef on the seat clamp to stop the post from slipping down, and because the fit is so bad the post more than likely rocks inside the seat tube as well.

Hey presto - you work harden that section of seat tube which makes it brittle, concentrates the forces at the bottom of that slot, and before you know it you have a cracked frame.

Now, who's for the long explanation?

Suffice to say my frames don't have that problem.

The other solution is to do the same thing, but make kind of a lug on the outside of the seat tube to beef up the wall thickness a bit. That can look neat in a ye-olde-school kinda way, too.

Any of you blokes see 'The Gooch' tonight?.......quality TV....not...but at least its about cycling. I think they picked the only day in the history of mankind that the 'Hell Ride" had only 50 blokes.....Helmet cam in the sprint was awesome though!

I really think (hope) that my bad habit of slamming back onto the seat after out of the saddle efforts had a lot do with the break. Needless to say, I've stopped doing it.

I rode the Cervelo tonight for the first time in 3 or 4 months, and I forgot how good and smooth it was.
I've been beating around on my Dedacciai 7003 Kennedy for a couple of weeks, and wasn't realizing how much it was beating me up -- even on Beach Road! The alu Kennedy will definitely become my "wet day only" bike.

I've stiffened up the Cervelo a little by putting the 1" Roselli fork (with the alu steerer) on it. There's no doubt it has more BB flex than my alu frames, but I like to call it "whip" -- and it's worth it, anyway, for the smoothness.

I've gotta admit that I've only just bought my first set of Shimano dual pivot brakes (2nd hand Dura-Ace 7700) since I had some Ultegra dual pivots in about '93, which I sold. Since then I've only used crappy Campag single pivot calipers from the mid '90s. Brakes were obviously the last thing I decided to upgrade, because I didn't need new calipers to go from 7 speed, to 8 speed, to 9 speed, etc, so I never bought any.

Listen to this: TONIGHT WAS THE FIRST TIME SINCE I WAS ABOUT 14 THAT MY REAR WHEEL LIFTED OFF THE GROUND WHEN I APPLIED THE FRONT BRAKE!! COULDN'T BELIEEEEEVE IT.

These Dura-Ace calipers are fkn amazing!! Welcome to the 90s, Nev

Reminded me of the Jack Brabham story when he drove a modern F1 car: he anticipated the horsepower, but didn't anticipate the amazing braking power, so he applied the brakes so far from the corner that he had to accelerate again to get to the bend!!
