Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

He makes it look so easy, the barstud.

I tried it once (ie. winning a sprint) and it hurt like hell. My quads have never forgiven me!

Hi Blokes...been a while. Damned if I'm not working too hard at the moment, cause I just don't get the time to come here often enough...need to find another job.

Just wanted to share something with you lot which is not bike related...Had a game of golf at Portsea Golf Club last sunday and I had an Albatros on the 6th hole. For those of you who don't know what this is and give a damn, I took two shots on a par 5.

As I said, not bike related but is the 'Everest' of golf.

There was lot's of shouting generally. Firstly when it went in the hole and then when I got to the bar...The wife couldn't understand why I had to spend $200+ shouting everyone else when I got the Albatros...It was just easier to outwardly accept that "I was stupid" and let her get over it.

I shout when I can manage a par.

So tell us about it wattsy. Distance? Clubs? Obstacles? What hole as well? I've got a mate who plays there, so I'll do some bragging to him for ya.

So the 6th at Portsea is 445m from the back tees. The hole is a 'rolling' dogleft left which has an elevated tee where you drive down the fairway and then have your second shot up to the green. The breeze was right to left and about 15kph.

Took the driver off the tee and sconned out of the centre. The ball started right of centre and then drew back with the breeze. The ball landed about the middle of the fairway and then rolled down to the left edge of the fairway. Fortunately there is a flat section right where my ball landed.

The second shot was uphill to the flag which was on the front edge and in the middle of the green. I was about 185m from the flag and hit the 5 iron out of the sweet spot cause I didn't even feel the club hit the ball. Again the ball had about 2 metres of draw on it and was 'tracking' into the flag in flight. It bounced on the front of the green and then I couldn't see it due the green being uphill. My playing partner just kept on digging me about the'Eagle' I'd be putting for the whole way up the fairway.

When I got the green I couldn't see the ball, so I started getting p*ssed that the shot had rolled through the green. Had a look at the back of the green and still couldn't find the ball. My mate then shouted for me to check the hole, which I did and found the pill sitting smiling up at me at the bottom.

I then started shouting crap like "it's in the hole...I hit an Albatros". Some people clapped, others told me to shut up...but I didn't care. I WAS KING OF THE WORLD!!!

BTW, I was palying in the Sunday comp, so we were off the back tees. Also, the 2 was recorded with the Professional who duly handed over 1/2 dozen golf balls for the effort. I also won the comp as I hit 72 (parred the course) off the stick. My handicap was 8 at the time and is now 6.

It's less about the game and more about getting away from it all... well away from the nagging at least

[edit] and I think you erred in inferring that golfers have the remotest amount of control over the stupid ball

Nah Jock...I have a hit of golf when I need to get some agro out. One of the benefits of being 100kgs is I can belt the crap out of the ball.

I ride cause I get to talk sh*t for a couple hours with friends and have some excercise at the same time.

Having said that, I heard the Stinger tees were giving another 5 metres with the driver...

When's the next chance to order?

Saccy, maps arrived yesterday. A good start, but a pilot friend has the exact thing I need. Apparently pilots get detailed maps with GPS coordinates already on them. Who knew?

Wattsy, I'm around the 100kg mark too. You want to belt the crap out a golf ball, use a bat.

Yeah, I can hit the ball a long way myself, at least I could the last time I played when I was 20kg heavier than I am now. Now I weigh 80kg and have had a broken wrist and collarbone plus a farked up AC joint from cycling crashes and wonder if I could even hit the ball these days.

My mrs keeps asking me to take her out golfing so I'll have to give it a whirl and see what happens.

NZ golf club membership includes hole-in-one insurance, so that helps keep the wallet in better shape if you have a spot of good luck on the course.

Bad luck on the handicap there, your burgling days are over
