Didn't Hinault ride Gitanes? He really must have been great to win the Tour 5 times on such crappy bikes.

Didn't have much to say in the end. He's prolly right. I'd take an Orbea style paintjob any day over the Gitane stuff. But I'm not in it to look like friggin prince charming like all the other clowns out there.

BTW, if you're quoting huge chunks try using italics for the whole quoted section. Less confusion.

He's a ****, I raced a Univega for 2 years and still did allright, he probably couldn't do Gosford to Sydney in under 6 hours, so what would he know?

Gitane were one of "THE" bikes to get back ye olde days.
I recently saw an '04 catalogue, and not only are they making the cheap alu
stuff, they also make kids bikes!!

Could you imagine Colnago or Pinarello puting out a product line like the current
Gitane stuff?

Before you flame me, Munch, I know they ride well and are great value for money, etc, etc,
but in the the 80s they were one of my dream bikes.

I had 60-65 in those crap tires on our ride. Of course, I like that edgy, riding on marbles feel. I generally stick to the higher end of the range, as like speed, and hate pinch flats. When I drove to the trail head, I generally ran lower pressures, but not much lower. Don't take advice from someone that used to ride a 10 speed through the bush in the 70's.

So now your dream of owning a Gitane can be a reality for so many poor little children out there who can only dream of owning white shoes

As I go through my shed, I keep finding all these goodies that I won't be packing. For instance, I found a CO2 adapter and 5 brand new threaded 12g cartridges. I'll probably put them on ebay, but if anyone wants to PM or email me with a reason not to, feel free to do so. You should put your reason in numerical terms.

I dunno what happened to the leg. No idea how you get a gash on the outside of your left leg when the chainring is on the right either. It's all a mystery I'd rather not think about.

I dunno if Gitanes were big in the 80's...I think it was more of a 70's thing, which, of course, makes 531 ANCIENT. Late 80's it was all about the lugged Pinarellos, Viners, and Colnago's for me ( with a small amount of idiots coveting Cannondales, the first Giant carbons, Alans and those other crap lugged Aluminium things etc. ) I had a Centurian Ironman, which was white with black splatters and full Ultegra....I think.

I hope these modern Gitanes are good value, coz they're not "[Gitane cycles are the] embodiment of quality, style and tradition" like the website says....alhough they are made by Kinesis which is usually a good sign.

Yep....the smoked "white-to-colour fade" paint job was all the rage.....along with those red and white Look pedals the size of a house brick, Shimano 600 SIS 7-speed downtube shifters and those grey and red Eddy Merckx Adidas shoes.

Aaahh.......nostalgia.

Munchie should feel right at home on my Kinesis MTB then.
