Anyone else notice how many TDF riders use aluminium seatposts? I counted four, just in the ten man breakaway! LA also uses alum. (or at least he was using one last nite)

Are you sure they weren't CF seatposts covered with faux-Aluminium stickers?

[edit] Sorry berny, I haven't noticed a single thing about anyone's bike. The two main things that I've noticed is that the Discovery team look puncy in that stupid blue and Ivan Basso and Cadel Evans look like identical twins through a sleep haze. I don't know how many times I've 'found' Cadel Evans in the pack slogging it out on a climb for the CSC team

I have a couple of Ti posts that seem fine to me on my road and mtn bike. Why not use Alu? does carbon have much of a benefit in that area?

CF is supposed to be 'the lightest' but it is fragile in as much as it doesn't perform well under excessive compression, a problem with home mechs and spanners and a cf post needs the correct torque to stop it slipping down so tension on the clamp is torque wrench critical. And when cf fails it does so in a catastrophic manner.
I doubt LA and the guys think the minor weight savings are worth the risk.

Those on the road minor adjustments would be impossible with a CF seatpost, imagine trying to get the right torque hanging out of the car with an allen key at 50 k/ph.

CF posts are not worth the money in my opinion. This magic 'vibration damping' just doesn't exist as far as my arse can tell - you're much better off having a seatpost that stays put, won't snap and more importantly....the more of it that sticks out of the frame, the more flexy it will be ergo, the more 'comfy' it will be.

The Al seatposts in the Peloton are because, yeah, easier to clamp with less finesse, and many teams run DA posts because they're sponsored by Shimano.

No point in going for lightweight if you have to add lead to the bike to get in into the UCI limit!

The lazy buggers had a day orf. Shoulda been made to ride two stages I say.

And yes, today is going to be a long day, with a slight pudginess in the middle.

1 degree is too cold to ride if you ask me, I'm tired of riding in the cold.... I want a tan line again.
