Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Angry because he knows as soon as the other teams hear that Evans has attacked the group and gone ahead even further, they'll start to chase to protect their guys in the top 10.

He's right. All the good riders should be riding with Lance in the peleton.

Did you translate that Munchie? Good work. And here we thought you barely had a grasp even on English.
Kinda. Used a translator which made a total hash of it - literal translations always suck. So it was time to consult a few very rusty brain cells to put an intelligent spin on things. I didn't have a clue with some lines, especially the one about the red devil. I think he was hoping some guy dressed in a red devil suit would run ahead (on foot) and give him inspiration, but it was too hard to tell. I also had to consult the race commentary a coupla times because the literal translation often confuses time/tense and things like forward/back and ahead/behind.

Here's a sample of the literal translation "Such an end thriller group is an alliance on credit. It must harmonize, has otherwise it no chance before the field. Yet the alliance holds only as long as you show no weakness. He who cannot follow the speed, is out. I feel good. My moral is crazy. The closing-day gave me correctly power. Cadel Evans is sounds a real danger for our group, so stupid that. It is too good in the Gesamtklassement, the other teams never would let it as competitions for the Top-Ten-drivers in quiet. Therefore is negotiated in the Renntempo. Without us, other drivers is Evans aufgeschmissen. I would howl to be sure to take now the legs highly, but the Drohpotenzial causes. The not-attack-pact realization. We everyone go for and with Evans, bring it forwards. For that it holds together the group and lets us around the victory sprinten – if we create it then into the goal. "

Hey, I just bought the Winter edition of Ride mag. That's not the latest one, is it? Is a new one just about to come out and I've been jipped?

Jeez....the UCI would've been all over my circa 1995 32-hole Campagnolo Atlanta clinchers laced to Dura-Ace hubs in that case!!

How about Boardman??? Ripped his own legs orf in 2000 to only go 10m past Merckx!!

Because I couldn't work it all out, even with my exceptional superpowers and my german is fast fading so there's a few errors in it.

Yeah...it was meant to "bookend" his pro career. He did it on a TT frame in Bordeaux in 1993, but using the old skool kit is a different story.

yeah, an inch is usually as good as a mile, but taking the hour by a slim margin seems a bit... well... pointless. I've done it plenty of times myself, but never thought the attempts worthy of recognition

what's the deal with cameras at the hour records?

I reckon there's a total of about 5 pics in the whole world of ALL the records combined.

these shitty pics are obviously taken off the tv

I have the Channel 4 documentary of Boardman's lead up to and succesful attempt in 1993 on VHS. Very interesting....inlcudes a lot on his rivalry with Graeme Obree (Obree broke the record in Hamar, Norway as Boardman was prepping for his attempt).

Boardman has a good sense of humour. Funny guy.

No one seems to remember that when Lance turned pro in 93 he had an attitude the size of Cipo's walk in wardrobe.

I remember an interview with Stephen Roche in his final year....some very unfavourable comments about the Lancemeister.

Yeah!! What about the guy on "The Science of Armstrong" (or whatever that show was called), who said that he was the most arrogant, cocky guy he'd met in his WHOLE LIFE.....ok, he was only about 16, but still

I think it was the guy from Shimano

I remember a post race interview with Lance after stage 13 in 1995 when Outschakov outsprinted him. Lance was very unsportsman about his rival's "right" to win. It was the funniest, most enjoyable sprint finish I have ever seen. Phil Liggitt was calling it a Lance victory basically from the 1km balloon.Gosh it was great.
Steve.
