Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: 8 bikes - one for each day of the week!

If I offended anyone recently, I do apologize. Probably goes against the rules of The Aussie Thread, but I don't want anyone thinking I'm putting down Australia.

Thanks guys for the sentiments but honestly in bike terms, 64 ain't that old. There are others in 'E' grade who are 70+ and can kick my a$$. Anyone who knows Colin Appleyard from the Hunter region, knows what I'm talking about. I've raced against blokes in my age group (cat7) who win masters 'B' grade. Gold medal winners at world track meets.
The reason I like bike racing so much is because of this competitiveness. It's bloody hard to make an impression amongst talent like that.
Come down to Eastern Crk Raceway next Sunday and have a go, you'll be very surprised at the level of excellence. Great track to race on.
Racing starts at 7am.

Bikes: Thylacines...only Thylacines.

Expat, shaddap will ya! We know you're not knocking Oz, and even if you were, we wouldn't give a stuff anyway.

Berny, E Grade at 60+!?! I had no idea man. You kick arse. I can't race and I'm 33, so thanks, you're making me look bad!

I'm hanging a few laps of the dirt crit course a couple of times a week (sorry, mtb content. Look away if you're offended) in vague preparation to doing a race maybe sometime in the future, but that means it probably won't happen. My mate who's probably only been riding for a couple of years is hangin' it in B grade and making me feel very old and slow. Thankfully he's riding a Thylacine, so it's all good

Lawyer McGee - Protest
Date: Saturday 7th May 2005
Starting time: 9:30am
Location: Sydney Hyde Park Fountain

In South Australia Eugene McGee, lawyer and former police office, under the possible influence of alcohol (this is not confirmed because the police failed to breath-test him within 2 hours of the incident, although McGee admits to having consumed about 5 glasses of red wine) hit a cyclist with his 4WD and did not stop. The cyclist is Ian Humphry, husband and father of two, is left on the side of the road to die. McGee is fined $3100 and is having his licence suspended.

Is that justice?
Show your disgust and outrage and come to the solidarity rally titled "Wheels of Justice" in Sydney! Adelaide and Melbourne are also holding simultaneous rallies to raise awareness of the incident and for cyclist's rights!

Saturday 7th May 9:30am, Hyde Park Fountain

South Australian minister for justice contact;

What I wrote;
This outcome is an absolute outrage.
As a cyclist I'm extremely disturbed at the leniency of the sentence. In a period where cyclists rights are seriously compromised/misunderstood and riders much maligned by motor vehicle operators, this verdict affirms the assertion that riders lives are of little consequence and the government's ambivalent attitude toward road cyclists, i.e., that they are simply a nuisance and should be treated with contempt by other road users.

This farcical decision degrades the dignity of every Australian citizen and our integrity as a nation. An utter disgrace.

I guess I just don't get the fine part. Who detemined what this life was worth? Looks like McGee really knows how to work the system, making this case a great endorsement for his services.

We can't make it to Sydney, but we're planning on taking the tandem out this weekend. If we come across Newcastle Cycleways, we may join them.

See the McGee case has an inquest on it now, corruption at it's best. Hopefully the protesting does something

Do the Akuna Bay ride on Sat morning (6:45 at the shop). They usually have three groups, and noobs can roll along in the C group getting tips on group riding before progressing to the more testosterone filled groups. It's a tough ride, but good fun.

The Tue-Wed nite rides start out easy for three laps then all hell breaks loose. Frenetic pace lines on both nites and sprints on Wed. Not for the inexperienced or faint hearted.

[edit] You need to be covered by insurance so I guess you need to be a member of some club, and they also like you to wear a turramurra jersey so they know who's in their group.

Oh yeah, if you do get into the group ride thang then the regular Sunday rides are good value. Plenty of testing hillwork (but they always regroup at the top for slow mongrels like me!) and fast group riding across various scenic courses.
