I wouldn’t have guessed that a female interested in learning more about cycling would be reluctant to post questions or share their thoughts. The amount of vulgar and insulting posts directed towards females seems infrequent from my eyes. I just read them and think “idiot” and move on.

Even if others called out the vulgar posts, I doubt if it would stop or change anything. Some are doing it for shock and entertainment value. There are many lurkers that are probably more reluctant to post for fear of getting flamed or facepalmed.

Maybe you can spread the word in the woman’s forum to encourage participation in RC. The <1% of insulting posts shouldn’t keep you away. If a post is truly vulgar, the mods should immediately pull it.

This would appear to be a discussion purely about the road forum, no? Quite honestly it's held up much better as a mature discussion than it ever would in Foo.

Because it is specifically about the Road Forum ... it's not about Foo or other forums.

I don't know about all the other forums here because I don't frequent them all, but I do know that if a guy posts a ride report in Long Distance or Touring, and mentions meeting up with a girl at some point during that ride, the response is not "Was she hot?" "Did you two hook up?" Etc. That seems to be a Road Forum response.

Now interestingly, the age profile in Long Distance and Touring tends to be a bit older. Is that why there is more of a focus on the cycling aspect of things there, and less on the looks of the women involved? Or is it something else?

I try to encourage more women to leap and and participate all the time ... even if it is just simply starting by participating in the Weekend Ride thread, and then branching out from there.

But here's the thing ... women are concerned that if they post something, it will either deteriorate into something vulgar and insulting ... or that they will get flamed or facepalmed because they don't know the right questions to ask or right terms to use or whatever. There's a concern about both things.

I think women should just get in here and post ... and I also think that the mods should be right on it if it turns negative toward the women.

The worst I've seen for a female, especially a newbie, is someone taking a few extra minutes to explain something. While I'm sure the infrequent flame has occurred, I believe it to be far from the norm.

Flirting doesn't make it OK to lob inappropriate comments. Obviously there have been women on here who get some weird kick out of said inappropriate stuff and feed their egos on it, but that's as big a problem as anything simply because it doesn't belong out in the open forum.

In the same way that dressing provocatively isn't an invitation for unwanted sexual advances, an avatar/sig that display some bit of sexuality are not a big red flag saying "please be vulgar around me."

This will either quiet things a bit, or throw gas on the fire.
