Three days in a row it has rained in the late afternoon/evening, interfering with riding activities.

Yesterday I was out riding.

Lame.

How hardcore can fans be here?

On the radio they're discussing a Tennessee fan who's having the minister recite General Neyland's seven Game Maxims as part of the wedding ceremony:

* The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.
* Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE.
* If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up... put on more steam.
* Protect our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ball game.
* Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.
* Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.
* Carry the fight to our opponent and keep it there for 60 minutes.

Sometimes I wish I had something more spiffy, but then I couldn't buy as much bike schwag.

I bought a 1988 Volvo 240 5-speed for $200 to use as a winter beater. Apparently it had been run into by an SUV while parked. The trunk was caved in about an inch but still locked, and the heated seats didn't work. The heater on those things is sooooo great!

Rear wheel drive, 4-wheel discs (since the 1960s? You're awesome, Volvo), manual transmission, and winter tires made for some awesome driving in the winter; and if I slid off the road or something... who cares?

Then one day the town came and towed it because I had it parked in the street in front of my parents' place without a license plate on it--in a cul de sac street with 5 houses. It wasn't worth the money to get it out, but in retrospect I wish that I would have.

There was a 10-day stretch that was mostly dry, so I assume much of that returned closer to normal levels.

I don't think anyone is going to be driving on this road anytime soon, though.

Not on a road bike anyway. Time to break out the full suspension MTB.

My neighbor's idiot kid and his similarly imbecilic college pals are planning a cross country ride over 30 days for the Livestrong charity. I don't think any of them have ever completed a century before, let alone ridden loaded road bikes (they'll be doing this with packs on the bikes, no support vehicle) 3000 miles over a month.

This can't end well. They're supposed to come to me for 'advice' later. My advice will be to eBay the gear, send apologies to Livestrong and blow the money on a weekend in Atlantic City.

3000 miles in a month? Is that, like, a lot, or something?

Tell them to go for it! They're young; what could possibly go wrong?

Velo Vol 05-18-10 07:27 PM

At times I think it would be cool to go on an epic cross-country ride. But if I had to haul stuff, touring-style, I think I'd last about two days before aborting mission.

In other news, Washington won the NBA draft.

Some may call them the Wizards, but they'll always be the Bullets to me.
