It's about an hour drive to get to the mountains--farther for better riding spots.

I hate driving. Still, I should be out there more than I've been this year.

What mntn routes do you ride in Tn. Vol? I have been contemplating a Climbing vacation if I can get to my target weight of 200 lbs. I was thinking of N. Carolina, but am open to suggestions. Cali. was an option at one point but would cost a fortune. Thoughts?

There are more riding options on the North Carolina side of the mountains.

As I mentioned the Blue Ridge Parkway is nice (at least at the southern end). The grades generally don't exceed 5-6%, wide sweeping turns, low traffic (except during peak times) and great scenery.

Other nearby roads can also be nice. For example, here are routes around Sylva, NC.

There are several nice places to see and/or cycle near Asheville (Mount Mitchell, Lake Lure, etc.).

Roads in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park would be nice, but the traffic is too annoying unless you ride early morning on weekdays.

I understand there's good riding around Boone, NC, but I've never been there (except to Roan Mountain, on the Tennessee side).

The Cherohala Skyway is a challenging adventure. Typically very light traffic except when the motorcyclists invade on the weekends and holidays.

I could have been the owner of an Addict. There's someone selling a frameset with a minor repair here for a good price but it's the early 08 version with the press-fit bearings that are Shimano only, and the groupset I'd be swapping on is Campy. Ah well...

If you flat in a race, you are done. Some bring tubes for RRs just so that they can make it home. No need to bring one tomorrow.

If it is at the end (where they often are) If I am behind it I don't go all out. Just kinda pedal thru the line.

Also at the end (if you make it) you generally take a cool down lap. Don't stop once you pass the finish.
