Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sounds good! This is a quote from the review I read - https://www.bikeradar.com/gear/catego...al-us-11-44763

"The Schwalbe Lugano folding clinchers are a reasonable weight at 290g apiece and have decent grip but rolling resistance is almost unbelievably high – to the point where we stopped a couple of times during the maiden voyage trying to figure out what was broken. The stiff, overly rubberized sidewalls also lend a crude, stiff and dull ride quality.
It wasn't until we swapped out the low-rent rubber for something nicer – in this case, Specialized's awesome new S-Works Turbo – that the CAAD10 revealed its potential. If you're a privateer racer and already have some better wheels for competition then feel free to use the stock Schwalbe Luganos until the cords show. Otherwise, we'd suggest swapping them out before you even walk out the shop door."

I'm in the same boat, riding on the stock Schwalbe Lugano that came with my CAAD10 105. My friend suggested the Schwalbe Durano b/c it's a better tire with low rolling resistance and has good puncture protection. I looked it up and it's much cheaper than the Conti Gator Skins. I don't do any races, but I do enjoy my weekend rides (varying rolling hills, usually 40-80km in distances). Anybody have suggestions/recommendations on a durable, speedy tire with good grip?

I swapped out the stock Schwalbe Lugano off the CAAD 10 5 and replaced them with Continental Grand Prix 4 Season 700x25 for winter riding. In spite of the increased tire width, there was significant performance improvement from reduced rolling resistance and reduced weight (218g vs 325g). Even thought the winter riding season is over, I'm keeping the winter tires on for performance and comfort.

Yeah, it was quite a find for $320. I think the original owner rode a few 100 kms on it, bent the rear derailleur from the bottom of the cage, and just hung it up after he couldn't adjust it. I noticed the bent cage right away (he though it was just old and couldn't shift well anymore). A visual of the hanger by me was okay. I checked it closer at home and it was still aligned perfectly.

Only thing I did was removed the computer and updated the cockpit (new bars and stem and a quill adapter I had on hand). I slapped a spacer above the threaded headset to clean up the lines a bit.

It does seem nice for a commuter, but I do the bulk of my riding is to/from work as I incorporate a long ride when I go home. It is nice to have a solid B bike like this. 3 screws and the rack is off and it is ready for a club ride if my A bike is out of commission.

Cool! So your upgrades are for the most part the DA 9000 C24's? I am still tossing things around here.

I was thinking 56 cm Rival, 9000 or the RS80's (need to research ultegra/DA hubs and $300 is $300), throwing on a SRAM force 53/39 (Ohio yet I could do the 50 and just spin faster my average is only 76-77), and 700x25 Conti GP4000, with Specialized Romin expert saddle.
I am assuming those upgrades will take me Sub 17 lbs.

Edit: oh and the SRAM quickview. https://www.sram.com/sram/road/produc...computer-mount

Hey guys,

Just started looking on Craigslist and eBay for a CAAD9 or 10. I have a couple of questions.

1. Ideally I'd be able to find just the frame, but does it make more sense economically to buy a complete CAAD and sell the components?

2. What's a fair price to pay for the following examples in good, used condition:

CAAD9 58cm frame + fork
CAAD9 58cm complete bike
CAAD10 58cm frame + fork
CAAD10 58cm complete bike

If it makes a difference, I'm in SoCal.

Thank you!

Dave1442397 & Chopstick Hero, And Whizzer283,

Read that Bikerader review a while ago and most seem to say the same. But this is my first bike so i thought that i would wear the Lugano's out. However, my Continental GP4000s 700x23 Arrived from the UK yesterday (along With my Lezyne Classic Floor Pump in Black). I am tempted to put them on ASAP. I have 3 choices:

1. Give in to my inner child and put them on now. I am a newbie cyclist so don't know if i could tell the difference. Even if i could, i don't race so is it not worth me wearing out the lugano's rather than take them off and waste them?
2. Wait until the Lugano's wear out, or use the Lugano's for at least 1000km and then put the GP4000s on. only done 130km so far on the Lugano's with my 2013 Black/Silver RAW CAAD10 105
3. Leave the Lugano's on. Wait for the custom wheels to come in a couple of months, and then put brand new GP4000s Black Chilli onto Brand new custom wheels

decisions decisions. not life threatening decisions, but i can hear the GP4000s' calling me from the cupboard while i sleep at night

raatty You say you have new wheels showing up in 2 months.
IMO it all comes down to change them once or change them twice. If it was me, I'd change them twice. Best thing I ever did as a newbie was change my tires. It was enlightening as the the drastic difference in tires. and yes even a slight difference is very noticeable. I say do it and learn something.

I agree with Metieval, change them up if you want to. Tires are relatively easy to change and make drastic differences. I don't think there is any doubt that the GP4000s are better than the Luganos. However, if you have new wheels coming up too, you could wait a little and put the GP4000s on those, leaving you to only mount them once.

The luganos are the worst tire i've ever ridden. Changing them out was by far biggest store bought speed difference. Also the luganos flat easy and will leave you on the side of the road.

Stock CAAD10 Force after tax $2,795

CAAD10 Rival with RS80's, also switching out the Crank to a Force and tax = $2,771

What are my arguments? LOL Other than the Black/white is growing on me. The Shimano hubs are quiet. I have no idea what to expect from the FSA's.

RS80 16/20 spoke vs FSA Energy 20/24
Force Crank vs S900

I was going to throw a Romin Expert saddle on but I've no clue what either of those stock saddles are like.

I was for sure throwing on GP4000 on the Rival before it left the store, I know nothing about the Durano

I like the 11-26 better on the Rival than the 12-26 on the Force

Oh and I am not really a weight weenie. I mean my hybrid is 29 lbs on 700x28's any thing under 20 feels light! My caad8 r1000 was 19.5 with the Mavic elites.

yeah I can't hear my self argue anymore. If I got the Force I'd do brushed/black and de-badge the wheels if I could at least the FSA part maybe leaving the ENERGY stickers on.

I still like the 'grey' 10 on the black/white.... but then the RS80's have that ugly ass red 8 on them.

Personally i would opt for the Force model. It will shift much better than the rival version. Also other parts are upgraded on the force edition like the cassette, bars, seatpost and stem(if you were planning on using any of those).

I'm not a big shimano wheelset fan BTW

I have a 2011 CAAD10 in black/white with 105 and I think it works just fine. At the time, I didn't have the option of choosing the 10 4 over the 10 5, but definitely choose the frame that you think looks best, since all the other parts are replaceable.

My CAAD10-3 Ultegra is 16.1 lbs without the carbon pedals. I imagine the pedals and computer added another 250-300 grams but the carbon Cannondale cages are 20 grams each. I saved a pile of weight with the Soul 3.0 wheels set and ti skewers. I'm not sure if the GP4000s are lighter than the stock Mavic tires.
I'm not a weight weenie either, but its fun trying to stay light.

I was in a similar position in a sense. My options?

-2012 CAAD10 Ultegra $1800 (new)
-2012 Supersix Apex $1200 (new) - upgrade shifters to Red or wheelset
-2013 CAAD10 105 $1500 (new)
-2013 CAAD10 Rival $1700 (new)

I went with the first. It was the best bang for the buck. For an extra $24 you get almost everything else on your bike upgraded, instead of only upgrading the cranks and wheels. Not to say Rival is terrible, but for an extra $24, I'd spring for upgrading the overall bike.

I still wonder if I should have gone with the Supersix. I'm glad I didn't. Sure it would have been cool to have upgraded one part to the highest quality SRAM, but at the cost of bottom of the line components everywhere else? Not worth it. Especially with SRAM22 coming out now.

(Not to suggest Apex is bad)

Does the 16.1 lbs include pedals at all?

I think mine sitting ready to ride (excluding water bottles and saddle bag) is around 17.5. But then again everything is 100% stock. The only change was 2 25 gram water bottle cages. I'd love to get mine under 16 pounds. I am looking into a new wheelset. Also going to play around with various handlebars shapes to help comfort, and will ultimately shed some grams.

Not to sound like a weight weenie. I just find it fun trying to plan a build under certain weights and within certain budgets. I spent my finals week comparing cockpit, seatpost, and wheelset options to give me the best weight loss for my money.

Let's skip the complete bike estimates since there is too much variance in condition and different components.

WHAT would you say a good deal is ON:

CAAD9 frame + fork USED

CAAD10 frame + fork USED

i would venture to guess 600-650 is average deal on a used 10 frameset(headset and bb included)

Not sure about 2013, but the 2012 Ultegra 17.3 lbs and rival was 17.6 stock....... If the choice was Ultegra or Rival, I'd do Rival instantly.

As for the Force - Rival, assuming 2013's same weight as the 2012 Rival.
We are subtracting a lot of weight with the wheel/tire upgrade.
Subtracting weight with the Specialized saddle
subtracting weight with the Force Crank.
(subtract around a pound)

The review I saw on the Force was 16.3

As for my Argument of the two
Cost is the same $ ($24 difference)
Weight is pretty much the same 16.3 - 16.6

I guess that really Drives the nail home on THSdrummer's argument. No where else could I upgrade the brakes/shifters/bars/stem/cassette/chain/seatpost for $24!

as for the fun in weight. same thing! try to lose .3 lbs for $24

I guess the Force wins because it's doing both for $24.

The only thing that could change is Price... better deal on Rival, better deal on wheels/hubs as good as rs80's for less $ and Possibly finding a better deal than $231 for the Force Crank/chainrings.

Today I crashed my CAAD. Wheels are out of true, RD may be bent, and the right shifter is a little gummed up now, but it's ok.
