I'm outside of Chicago. I don't commute though, so riding in low 30 degree temps is not a pastime I have gotten accustomed to. I admit that I'm a fair weather cyclist, but I'm trying to see how long I can take it this year. Looks like a road trip is on the agenda for REI and the Pearl Izumi store.

That's one thing I've been missing. Wool socks. Long ones.

That was at about 8000 feet, BillyD. Down at city level it is warmer, but the wind blows across the snow, and I almost think it's colder. It can be 3 different seasons in 2 days here, so we're happy to deal with it.

Speed sensors. The CycleOps computer is the one I use on my three road bikes. I really like the Joule computer. And when it started having battery life issues they just sent me a new one after two years. Great customer support.

Cable went out. Those guys suck. But to be fair to them there are major power issues all over the place. I am surfing on the Wifi hotspot generated by my state of the art, all-your-phones-are-inferior-to-it-you-know-you-want-one iPhone 5.
I will hand this to Verizon: we are up here in lower bumfark and I get LTE reception atop Mt. Doom, we're 3 miles from downtown and Rt. 17. But close enough to grab the LTE signal much of the time. Verizon has by far the best coverage in the USA, and you start really finding that out if you venture 30+ mile away from a major city center. The other carriers suck up here, which is why everybody I know has been on Verizon here forever.
By the way, LTE is as fast or faster than Wifi. Impressive.

Okay, I've set my gear aside for tomorrow morning's ride:
Padded bibs, winter tights, baclava, long sleeve base layer, long sleeve jersey, long sleeve wind shell, wool socks, toe covers, and full finger gloves.
Sometime during the ride, I'll ascertain if I'm having fun or not.

You know it's too cold to ride if your iPod freezes (this happened to me one winter day, it was 12şF). I'm good down to 15şF or so. Colder if it's not too windy and/or if the sun is out.
