Well put, but labelling me a hobbyist as as bad as me labelling you a fanboi (your username).

Sorry, that was harsh. I'm just so used to debating PC fans who dismiss Mac fans as non-technical (a euphimism for 'dumb') just because they prefer a user friendly machine and the accuser just enjoys tinkering, like a hobbyist. It's tiresome and dumb.

i mean, i probably am a fangirl, but i like them because they just work. ever since i was introduced to macs and their os i've just never been interested in making the switch back. i don't care about building computers or having to root my phone. i want to just turn it on and have it work. it's a tool i use to do my job, and it's the best tool i've ever used for it.

I've been trying to get a MBP. "Trying" in that my world (IT Consulting) lives and breathes on Windows. I may bite the bullet, get a MBP, and just run Parallels or Oracle VBox. Hmm...

I hear ya. I smirk at Apple a lot of the time, but one of my favorite sayings is "That's why they make vanilla AND chocolate." :-)

That's absolutely incorrect. You can take stuff in there that's old as pcad, and they'll at least take a look at it for free before kicking you the hell out for being too cheap to upgrade your machine.

So true, different strokes for different folks.

But I'm sorry, the bmw/ford/chevy comparison is valid!

I think Windows 8 will do a lot to reduce people's interest in Windows. Everyone does not want the tablet experience on their PC, but that's what MS decided to do. I am debating actually buying a copy of Win 7 just to shelf in case I ever decide to build another windows based PC.

Apple and AutoCAD did the same thing: make sure your product is used in education. First, teachers are wonderful salespeople, with the technical skills of twinkies (RIP). Second, people with no expectation or experience with a benchmark product become accustomed to an inferior product, and convince themselves it works wonderfully. They then carry that familiarity forward, and remain attached as consumers.

At my last grade school open house, my son had to show me a presentation that he did on a Macbook. In the students switching between users, logging in, and then getting their "multimedia" presentation to play, there were more laptop reboots and disconnects than caused by Y2K.

I'm in the camp that does not enjoy going into an Apple store. As much as I dig their products, the Apple store is akin to wading through a pack of lemmings. If one could imagine what wading through a pack of lemmings may feel like.

well, sure, but it seems like in our household, i've gone through a lot less hardware and have had a lot less issues. (i'm a mac, he's a pc)

Come on, Billy - do we need to take a look at your statement again?

"Looking at it," and "untangling the mess you made" are two completely different things. Apple's warranty is explicit in their 90 day/1 year support, if someone at your Apple store goes above and beyond, that's great, but it's not company policy.

Donny and Marie were Country AND Rock n' Roll.

Thank you. I sent a photo to my doctor to see what she says I need to do or where I need to go.

If it is a grade 3 or severe grade 2 what would I do differently? I am currently using crutches and an air cast. I am also icing regularly and keeping it elevated.

No, you can stay in the desktop as much as you'd like, but it gives you the option to use an interface that lends itself to typical casual use, such as media consumption and communication, and input devices beyond the keyboard and mouse/trackpad. Computers are moving away from the desktop and control will be, too - 10-foot GUIs and touch control are one step closer to non-physical interaction such as gesture/voice (Kinect) and retina tracking.

Edited to add: I'll also bet you a jar full of wooden nickles that Apple will have touch screen interfaces with their non-mobile hardware/OS within 2 years.

truckstop 12-06-12 10:43 AM

this discussion has reminded me of my nerd crush on jonathan ive (product designer at apple who is taking over software design from the guy who thought all those terrible skeumorphic skins on apps were a good idea) and and excellent documentary that's available on netflix called "objectified", which i recommend if you're into that sort of thing.

I should have known your pitbull persona would not be satisfied with humor. But seriously, I took my 5 year old machine in there just last year and they helped me track down a conflict I was having, FOR FREE, with nary a mention of any original or extended warranties. And another time I took my iPhone in to check out some trouble I was having and they helped me with no questions asked.

The only thing I will concede is that their time is probably limited per customer visit, but if you have quick and easy problems they will quick and easy help you.

See: correlation vs causation - there are a lot of variables that could cause the differences in your experiences.

maybe it's because i don't have to use it, but i think windows is probably on the right track with 8. after hearing of how you interact with it after you've figured it out... people just tend to be really resistant to change.

sure sure, and i know that anecdotes are not evidence, but there's really nothing in my life to motivate me away from using apple products, despite an irritating IT department at work and friends who do their darndest to try.

i know it's possible, but have you ever tried taking a mac away from a graphic designer?* i think i actually gnashed my teeth at the IT director when he hinted at it. ;)

*see previous comment about being resistant to change.

Are you telling me that your machine wasn't just working? :innocent: But really, this is more a difference in retail channels that people are choosing to use, much like LBS vs Big Box - if you select a decent retailer, and Apple does retail well, you shouldn't have a problem finding someone smart enough to realize that looking at a sick computer is a good opportunity to either gain a loyal customer for the future or an immediate sale as a replacement.

truckstop 12-06-12 11:02 AM

** and some of that resistance is due to the fact that i started down my career path on pc's... oh... 20 years ago, and that was a total nightmare. switching to mac was a serious hallelujah moment with beams of light and angels singing and everything.
