It's absolutely beautiful here! 83 degrees and raining for the first time in over a month! Both kids are asleep! Mama's drinking wine and I'm drinking absolute 100 and red bull. A last hoorah before she starts her surrogacy tomorrow. Life is good!

Here is a recipe for marital success that will stand the test of time, worked for my parents and has worked for me.
1) Start off by being in love, if you are not sure you love her at the start trouble may follow.
2) Every single day after that marriage day remember that love, how you felt, and make a conscious, volitional decision to love and respect and to build up your wife. It's not a feeling, it's a decision, never belittle, never insult, never contradict in public or private.
3) Help her out, doing the dishes, the laundry, the shopping, the cooking.
4) Never go to bed angry, share the burden, the feelings without a "you said or you did", rather try" I feel "

That's pretty solid.

I would add find yourselves a strong church or Christian community, but some of you wouldnt hear me anyway.

you are so lucky. i look forward to my next bout of food poisoning for some rapid weight loss.

I have been bouncing around between 135 and 138. Maybe I need to eat some bread...

Great advice. I've successfully completed everything in 1, and 3. We clearly are not married so 2 has not happened. I like your idea with number 4. Great advice indeed. I really appreciate the help my BF brothers.

And an interesting gem from councilor #1 was a book called something like "The Four Languages of Love" (Warning: it may have been the 5 Languages of Love). It was an easy read, but the premise is that that there are basic ways that love is communicated (like physical contact, service, gift giving, time). People expect that everyone communicates the same way that they do, but most don't. For the wife and I, I am a physical contact person, and the wife is a service. So if I do the dishes, to me its a chore, and to her it is saying I give a crap about her.

It was interesting to learn, but has a dark side: once you know what your spouse needs to feed love, when you are in a pissy mood you know exactly what to withhold to hit them hardest. I am not saying it as a plus, but if you arm your child with it, they will use it. I am crossing counciling, which like the beams, is bad.

I could have a had a very nice bike for the amount I spent on marriage counselling / councilling, and I still don't know which word is correct.

My kids say I make the BEST milkshakes. I usually make them black-and-whites (vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup). Maybe I should start to drink them...

We've been married nearly 29 years.

I have no idea how this marriage thing is supposed to work.

It's probably better that way.

Not at all. My girls insist that dad makes the best milkshakes. Come over sometime and I will prove it.

clearly they are below the age where they think you are a total embarrassment and cringe whenever you try to act cool.

Wow. It's an 888 MB file to download. That's going to take awhile, even with high-speed internet. So glad we got rid of dial-up!

Yes, although the 12 year old starts to act that way in public if her friends are around...
