Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Have you known Hilton senior to look like anything but a lump o' lard?

He's been built like Boony ever since I first saw him, which was about '87, rumbling around Carnegie
on that motorbike with his Fonzie helmet on.

Bit of a legend out at Blackburn. I used to do my ergo sessions looking up at a poster of him riding high around the banking with his patented "bolt-on" pedals.

SBR are not me mates.......they just came up with a deal on the 486 that no-one else would go near....so...$ being what they are!.....when i was in the final stages of pumping 'em for a better price, they offered me a full SBR kit...told me it was worth $300.....I said, nah, but you can take the $300 off
the price & we'll do it!...he had 'nowhere' to go then...so i got me discount.

Speaking of Hilton Jnr, i was watching that DVD 'the hard road' last night, the one the seppo's are always on about, he's a member of the team thats featured in it..'Net zero' or something...not a bad doco. they got absolutely spanked by hincapie in the US Pro RR. It's typical yank stuff though, the narrator makes some outrageous statements though, like, "the US pro road race in philledelphia is one of the most prestigous 1 day races in the world".......ummmm ok, s'pose it might be '1 of them'....ranked about 97 i reckon!

It was time to get a life and realise I wasn't Stuart O'Grady.

I didn't want to be 31, working at Fitzroy Cycles 4 days a week and still living with my Mum.

I think USPRO champs is still the richest one-day prize in the world.....but I know what I'd prefer on my palmares between a win there or at Flanders.

the field wasn't that flash...postal fielded a team of 2nd stringers, (apart from george), coupla blokes from CSC (lesser lights), they had 'mercury', 'saturn' etc but no-one else of note...just the fact theat young hilton got a start means they weren't overly endowed with 'names'.....some old bloke...a kiwi, graham miller, 42 or something (anyone ever heard of him?) was rippin' it up early...probably says lotsa bout the standard

It's OK Hitchy, you don't have to be defensive...if you want to hang out with the SBR boys, that's your decision. It doesn't matter what we think.

As it happens, Graeme Miller is also on my vid from the '90 Comm Games, winning an excellent road race. He's done a cupla Sun Tours and is an absolute god in NZL cycling.

Tough, tough bike rider.
