Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

FOO?.....FOO?...we're officially FOO?...what the fark is foo?...what have you blokes done?....I told you before, each new post must contain at least some reference, no matter how obscure, to bikes on roads....FOO?....Foo for farks sake!.....Foo has gotta mean "mindless crap that we don't know how to classify"........so we taking over Foo....can we vote for a name change for Foo?.......so how is life in Foo?.....no more 'I've got a puncture, what now?' threads....'how will I live!.....Fooo?....fark, they coulda moved it somewhere else!

As 531 might say: BWAHAHAHAAAAHHAAHHHHAAAA.

We've been Foo-barred. As were Garden Variety Gnome (b 97) and the Punting Thug (st 98). BWAHAAAHHAAAAHHAHAHAHA to them too! Comic tragedy.

Hey Munchie, how they heck are ya? 531 asked if Torelli tubes could be purchased at a retail outlet here in Oz. Had to remind him I only knew of one place. You can probably guess. I'm ordering in January, do you need any?

By jove I think I've got it! (say it with a 1950's english actor accent for the full effect!)...If we got moved to Foo for not being 'roadie' enough....all we have to do is not be 'Foo' enough & we get chucked out of here too!....we could become like a mobile thread!....keep getting chucked out of everywhere for disrespecting the locals.....sorta like the US army, only funny! .....('there'! thinks Hitchy,"thats a start")....I only have one question!....Given that 'Foo' would appear to be ' mindless unclassified crap'...how the fark do we get chucked out of here?......Don't tell me we gotta start talking about bikes?.....oh the humanity!

Maybe we're such a "time-slot hit" that they've moved us to boost the ratings of this section -- just like when NBC moved Cheers to Thurday to boost Thurday night ratings.

another example of Rhyming slang...I was talking to a mate this morning about the bloody great 'noah' that ate someone off a SA beach the other day. 'Noah', as in 'Noah's Ark'= 'Shark'. In Oz, a big shark is generally known as a 'Bloody great Noah'

cheers,

Hitchy

Hmmmmm, well, no, not really. Nice try though

"Oz" is obviously linked to "Dorothy", but it doesn't rhyme, so, no go.

It's not really something that the "under 40s" do -- it's more of an old man's thing

Here's one: "that guy has a Moreton Bay fig".
"Moreton Bay fig" is rhyming slang for "wig"

Yeah, a "Tolie".

It's also probably more of a Brit thing than an Aussie thing.

I suppose they've got their own forum on Cycling Plus https://www.cyclingplus.co.uk/forum/

By the way, as far as I know, most Poms don't give a stuff about cricket -- it's all "FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL"
There's a love-hate relationship between the the brits and the yanks - they each seem to be fascinated by some aspects of the culture and appalled by others. That's exacerbated in online situations where people just seem to forget politeness. As a brit, the unquestioning jingoism that get's indoctrinated into yanks from birth can get tiring after a while. I don't doubt that they find the brit's lack of any apparent patriotism just as strange. Those are sweeping generalisations but that's probably got something to do with it. Having your own forum where people actually speak the same lingo probably has something to do with it as well

My dad's been a cricket groundsman for over 30 years so every summer when I was a kid I'd 'help' him mark out the wicket. I'd be playing cricket (well we'd be playing with a beer crate for stumps, a bat, tennis ball and a jumper for the other end) until it got too dark to see the ball. Most kids don't live anywhere near a public cricket pitch whereas you can just wander down the local park with your mates with a ball, put two jumpers on the ground for posts and voila, one instant football game. At school you'd play football in the first term, rugby would get played in the middle term if your school was posh and then it'd be athletics (yank: track & field) for the summer term. Cricket is still seen as a posh man's game except amongst the ethnic minorities who've largely migrated from the West Indies, India and Pakistan.

Sorry if I've rambled on too much
Paul

Thanks for that, Paul. Looks like you took some time to gather your thoguhts, and also made sure you wouldn't offend anyone. But your gramatically correct, properly structured paragraphs that contain no expletives really don't belong here.
