I got out smarted by two bike shop boys in the last 2km of the Firzroy ride last night (one of them was a TFM dude) -- I think they ganged up on me -- but at least we got rid of the very small bunch

What was that stuff all about on the Hurting People's Feelings thread? Were eyou dinky-di? I thought for a moment you had killed off the thread with a dose of sanity. I was trying to think of a reply, but couldn't without looking too harsh.

Yes, sorry, a rare moment of seriousness from me -- I should've opened with a warning.

Feel free to have a crack; I've heard 'em all before.

Unfortunately, I have a relative who's schizophrenic, and a couple of others who are "just" bipolar, and there are times when even a wrong look from someone can throw them off for a few days.

I couldn't figure out that response from WorldWind:
"It's a good thing none of us are strangers..... except you. Who are you?" Is he just trying to be funny, or does he actually think he knows someone very well after exchanging a few sentences on a forum?


This doesn't mean I'm getting all heavy on yooz; we've been dealing with it for nearly 20 years, so you don't have to tiptoe.

Any, like I said in that post, we just never know how sensitive people are to being bagged, even on an open forum like this.

Stewart Cook, who used to own Gran Prix Cyles in Caulfield Sth, and was a strong time-trialer, often told me about his very long training rides which only averaged about 28kmh. Coming from a gym background, to me, this made about as much sense as doing 10,000 reps to improve your max bench weight. It just never sunk in, and he basically ended up telling me I was a d1ckhead. My 'lack of understanding' problem was augmented by hanging out with "scientists" (physiology lecturers who never rode bikes), who laughed at the suggestion of training 600 or 700km a week for 45km criterium.

Like I've said before, when training for the criteriums and track stuff, I used to absolutely KILL myself for less than 200km a week.

Do track riders still do heaps of kms?

I know diddly about track riding, but Ric Stern always was on about sprint and endurance riding and the differences between the two, especially in weight training and muscle bulk (good for sprinters, bad for endurance riders). And sprint was anything under ???? 500 metres? Endurance was anything over that?

That's probably the answer. Look at Ryan Bailey's physique in winning Olympic gold medals, then the Madison and other longer-distance riders like Brown, O'Grady, McGee et al, who are built more like lean road riders (in fact, they are). (Sorry to be sexist in the examples -- Mears and McTier and Carragan probably display the same traits).

So the answer, by my deduction (and according to the Stern creed) would be two-fold. Sprint track cyclists would concentrate time on building muscle bulk and power (most likely in the gym), and the endurance riders would do what they always have done -- ride, ride, ride.

Hmmmm.....haven't seen you post on Cycling Forums. Do you have a different user name over there?

Did you get my tip about the smiley faces the other day?
Rather than waiting for them to load, you can just type the code. For example, for "roflmao", you just type "roflmao" with the colons on either side. Same with the smile, etc

Oi All,

just finished Xmas dinner (burp!)......could possibly have put on the odd kg in the last few days!...just what an already fat barstard needs with the 'alpine classic' less than a month away....oh well, nose to the grindstone (well feet anyway!). BTW, my brother-in-law & family are in ****et for the xmas holidays!...all are safe...they were in the hotel havong brekky, when the next thing water is lapping around their ankles....didn't know what the fark was going on...they were staying on the 4th floor & the water made it to the 2nd.....all safe thankfully...they are trying to get a plane to Bangkok today....looks like they might be hitching a lift on a RAF hercules......the place is totally stuffed according to my brother in law. he says the death toll will be much higher than has been suggested yet!

Sprinters, no. Lots of short, maximal efforts with prolonged recovery sessions and gym work.

Endurance, yes. Basically a professional road program with some specialized track sessions.

No. Stern used to post on BF. I think he got tired of the imbeciles who claimed their theories were better than his, especially on weight training. But he certainly had a bit of impact on my interpretation of fitness, power, muscle bulk and stuff. Having a look at the successful Australians in the Olympics put it all into perspective, I suppose. Plus I had someone working for me early this year that was into Tacx trainers and power monitoring, and he was telling me about all that stuff. Sort of everything validated everything else. The views on fitness are like bike parts -- some are invaluable; the rest aren't worth a pinch of *****.

And yeah. Picked up on the smilies, thanks. Trouble is trying to remember them all. Here we go, we'll test it out with
