Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey Expat, tried that Clif bar on Sunday arvo. Looks damned ugly, tastes OK, filled a hole. But I mustn't have had enuf water with it coz I got killer cramps a little later. I thought a little alien was gonna pop outta my abdomen they were so bad! More water (about a buckets worth!) fixed the problem, but took a while.

I think I'll stick to bananas and bland-bars (they come in three flavours of bland) just to be on the safe side.

BTW, how much for the patch thingies?

I should have warned you that the Clif bar looks like um, well, yeah, ugly. Sorry about the bad experience. Did you try to eat it while riding, or did you stop somewhere for a quick break? It's got some fibre and caffeine, so you do need to drink a bit with them. You may want to try to the gel shots when they come in. The patch kits are 4 bucks and they contain 6 patches and a swatch of sandpaper. I can even post them to you for a dollar.

Ok all you Americans reading the Aussie Thread, now's the time to offer your 2 cents. Is Munchie completely mad for not liking Clif bars?

Oh it was nice enuf on the way down, to be sure. But I can do without stomach cramps on a ride. Apparently it's a pretty common thing, especially amongst triathletes where brand X sponsors an event and you "have to" use their product. A lot of guys and gals that aren't used to the product can wind up with a nasty cramp in the abs. The pro's find out what products will be rammed down their throat and train with them to find out how to use them.

Shades of Robocop "I'll buy that for a dollar..."

No need to post, I'll be up there again on the weekend. Might pick up a pack if it's convenient. And yes, I know I bought a lifetime supply of tubes on the weekend, but I'll be riding in some pretty remote areas over the next coupla months and don't want to get stranded. Sometimes three spares just aren't enuf.

No, it tastes like dirt, and even more, dirt that a dog peed on.

Clif bars suck.

Bikes: a few

Happy New Year all..... hardly rode my bike(s) all Xmas break, not very nice, went surfing instead which was awesome !

First tech question of the year. It's MTB related so I kow it's not supposed to be on the "road" board.

Having not done this for a while, I put on my crankset which I have a new 32 ring for on my MTB. It has a Race Face outer (42), Shimano 32, and no name 22 inner ring. I am running 9 speed with a SRAM chain. Now the thing won't shift down from the 32 to the 22. When the der. moves over nothing happens at all, it just rubs more and more on the chain, it won't get off the 32 ring no matter what I try. From the 42 down to the 32 it is great.

Only thing I can think of is that I need a Shimano chain, not a SRAM one but would that make a big difference?

What the hell am I supposed to be doing here?

The only issue I've heard of with mixing the most recent SRAM and Shimano is that the derailleurs and shifters have to match because they use different indexing. That said, it sounds like you need to adjust the inner limit screw on the front derailleur. I'd suggest you check out:

https://www.parktool.com/repair_help/...railleur.shtml

I've only ever mucked about with the drivetrain on my bike once so you may want to get a 2nd opinion

Climbo, it's a derailleur issue. Either the adjustment screw needs adjusting, or your derailleur may not offer enough swing for a triple. What shifter and derailleur are you using, and did this work before you replaced things?

Now that's just not nice. She died in 1996, you can remember a meal from that far back?

I adjusted the screw way out so the der. goes way over to the inside but it still wouldn't drop off the 32. It's all Shimano XT stuff (shifetrs and der.). The derailleur oves quite a lot, it rubs the chain and tweaks it at a huge angle because it's all the way over and the chain is still on the 32 ring rubbing the derailleur plate.

Before I replaced it it was a singlespeed, I haven't put the triple on it for about 3 years. So, it has worked in the past but not with this set-up, it was all different years ago, I had to get a new front der and ring for the cranks before I could put it back on.

Make sure the derailleur cable is completely slack when it's shifted to the granny ring. Also, make sure it's properly aligned. Have a beer. Is the 32 on correctly? And it's the same BB and cranks as before?

completely slack - got it.
32 on right - ? How do you tell? The ramps are to the inside, is it supposed to be aligned a certain way on the spider? There was one section (of the 5) with a little bump on the inside, I lined that up with the crankarm. (kinda like you do with the outer ring chainguard thingy)
beer - YES !
same BB and cranks - YES.

And yes, I cannot describe anything in writing about it, PM me if you have any more tips.

Thanks

Ouch, that is NICE !!

How do you like the rigid aspect? I found it refreshing although it's hard on your hands and back. It feels good though, you have a lot of control, no fork bobbing or twisting in the rough stuff. I'm a no maintenance kinda rider and was SS for years but out here I can't take all the steep hills on it (Ourimbah killed me first time I rode it), hurts way too much, hence my recent switch, and shifting problems.
