Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have a book on the native language - "Let Stalk Strine" and "Nose Tone Unturned" by Afferbeck Lauder. I'll look for the ones you mentioned as well.

Nice avatar Paul, well picked. See if you can find one his meaner/angrier moments. They're classic.

Aside: HTF did we end up with a yank and a scot infultrating the ranks?

Apparently, the old tops are actually bought by weight from Belgium or somewhere.

Imagine waking into a wholesaler and saying "I'll have 50 kilograms of random retro tops please"
Thanks Thylacine. Next time i'm out that way I will check it out!

No, I couldnt.......I'm sure this bloke told me a different name to Urban Recyle though. Anyway, I will get there next weekend.

Did you ride today? I went out about 10ish this morning and because the triathlon was on at Sandringham, beach road was bloked off to cars from South Road to Black rock I think......riders basically had the full two lanes to ride on and no cars to contend with....you would have loved it!!

I didn't get out 'til 5:30.

Were non-participants of the triathlon allowed to ride on the blocked bit off Beach Rd?

Selling stuff - apart from e-bay, are there any other good Aussie websites for selling bike gear? I'll post on the CCCC newsletter for free but that doesn't reach many people.

PS. If anyone is after an Arione saddle or a Cyclops trainer, PM me.

Well this is duller than a typical day in Melbourne

So I thought I'd go for a wander back though history. I found this little gem on a cyclingforums thread from 1988. The thread was called "What's the weirdest thing you've ever seen on a bike?"

Posted by: sssamcz

Back when I used to work in a bike shop we saw all sorts of oddballs come in. However, none was odder than Fish Tank Man. Of course, there is a story behind how he got the appelation of Fish Tank Man, and this is how it goes.

We were seeing through a fairly uneventful weekday afternoon in the shop when one of the strangest contraptions ever pulled up outside the glass front doors. The bike itself was fairly standard, a cheap, low-end MTB; but atop the rear rack was a big fishbowl. Into this fishbowl were inserted two electrodes, attached to wires running down to a generator of the type more commonly used for powering a light. The strangest was yet to come though, the bowl was covered by a plastic lid which had a tube running to the riders mouth by means of a face mask.

We were understandably quite astonished by this bizarre contraption, and had to ask the good man what all this was in aid of. He kindly explained the physics behind his set-up, the current passing through the water would apparently free the oxygen of its bond with the hydrogen, and then be funneled by means of the tube and mask to provide an extra boost of oxygen which would clearly provide greatly improved capacity for stamina. Well, obviously his logic was impeccable, and we didn't dare point out that perhaps he'd just be better off without the 20 litres of water on the back of his bike, and from that day on Fish Tank Man always received a warm welcome in our shop.

So that is undoubtedly the weirdest thing I've ever seen attached to a bike.

Sam

And welcome to Monday

Yeah, I'm using a Baudot Teletype too!

I'm working my way through all posts, in all threads, for all years, in all cycling forum sites. Natural born fact-hunter. Haven't found any facts yet, but I'm bound to find one gem amongst all the dribble. Ever the optimist.

I sometimes go through the tech and training Q&A archives on Velo News -- probably more 'facts' there

https://www.velonews.com/train/

The search function on the Velo News site is pretty good, too

I'm finally getting around to replacing the decal on my bike that Hitchy kindly scratched up for me when he forgot to not stop. Might give the old girl a bit of a scrub before I go out, she's looking a bit dirrrrty....
