Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah, the 7.55 or even the 7:36 I could have got (got home right about 7am) but I wanted to eat something before I left (and a shower) so too bad, I got the later one.

Whatever happens, never rely on the 8:55. It's a dog. Never on time

Hey guys.

Anyone here got any good tips on painting frames?
I'm restoring an old steel tip-shop frame. I've stripped it back, and made sure there's no rust on it, and I've put on a couple of layers of automotive primer. Now I need to start the real paint job. I've heard automotive enamel is the way to go, and I have an air brush, but I have no Idea how to do decals.
I know about sanding with super fine paper between coats etc. And I should finish with clear coat, but any tips, or info on doing decals would be great.

Cheers,
Dave

I hear 8 coats of wet sanded enamal on top of your decals is the hot ticket. It also guarantees you'll scratch it first time out. Oh, don't ride with whoever it was that crashes trying to avoid Japanese toursists. If you ask me, paint is over rated.

Cheers mate. I'll be sure to go and get some super fine wet 'n' dry paper. I've discovered the model shop in town has some clear decal inkjet paper for about $8 per sheet, so I guess that'll do the job pretty well. I suppose I should borrow the digi camera from work so I can get some before pics too

Just be sure the decals are compatible with the enamel. Best to do a test first on an empty can or something. Don't want to mess that up. Yes, take before and after photos too.

Inkjet bad: much bleeding will occur when the enamel hits it. You must use colour laser or wax deposit printing for results that don't run like a girl's mascara on video night.

Hey Munchie, I think my bike is set for a ride. 2 bar swaps, 4 stems, and I switched the fork too. Seems ok now.

Sorry for the late warning, but it looks like Ch10 will be screening Tour Down Under highlights for the next few nights, very late (~12:40am)

For those who saw Cycling Central:

I was a bit disappointed with the Phil Anderson bit. The poor guy just "ummed and ahed" for 6 mins, answering a couple of silly questions about his old pony tail, and why he can't commentate with his wife.

I know we're lucky to get ANY cycling show at all, but the people at SBS don't seem to realize just how much we're into equipment. On that 'Coxy' show (on another station), we got a quick glimpse of about a dozen of Anderson's old bikes, so I assumed we'd be seeing the old Zullo and Merckx goldies....but nada

And...jeeez, isn't the guy from Cycling News is a real natural in front of the camera

yeah, Gerard is just a bit of a "personality".

I missed the Phil bit, he would have hours worth of shows in him. And the bikes, yeah, let's get a viewing of them all !!

Thanks for that. I guess I'd better try to find a colour laser now

None at the Trans-Tasman Games (Hunter Valley vs Kiwis) either. Seems no-one could be bothered getting of their collective arses to put on a show.

Hey Expat, how long is a reasonable time before you start putting the heat on an Ebay winning bidder for some cashola? Ebay reckons 7 days. The guy's ebay reputation is excellent, but seems just a bit slow on the uptake and communication.
