Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

+1 on improper fit. I see riders almost every day on modern bikes with frames that are too small. Other components like setback seatposts and exaggerated stems help, but often the riders are cramped, stiffarmed, and perched forward. Often. Maybe they're happy with their biking experience, but maybe they're uncomfortable and don't know why...

That's fine and all... but it's still not "full".

Gotta sell what's on the truck.

Sure, but over in Shimano-land, would you really want money to be spent on an Ultegra over a 105? Yes, the new Red is a clear upgrade, but that's the exception of FD upgrades.

I kind of wished that this thread would have had decent legs, but it's rotten at the core. Meh. Maybe it'll entertain in a few more pages.

FWIW - I love those tricky bicycle sales guys. I'd hang with them if I could ever catch up to them. Driving around their high end cars and jet-setting all around the world with the huge bankrolls of money they trick are little bike nerdly friends out of....

....oh, that's right. None of that ever happened. ...time to go play with some nipples...

BS! Those people that go in insisting they need Di2 etc, are rich baby boomers who are spending large amounts of cash to get whatever they want. I see those types in LBS's too, most can't fix a flat or don't want to dirty their hands to do it. These same blue hairs are buying Corvettes, why? because some internet research told them too? No, it's what they want so they can cruise and never break the speed limit.

I'm veering off course but speaking of Di2, I saw the ultimate argument against electronic shifting for novices the other day. Part way through a 100km charity ride a woman noticed that her battery had fallen off somewhere en route leaving her stuck in high gear with about 80km to go. She was very unhappy.

good point.
and beyond the safety concern, I was surprised at the weight difference between tires. Ever curious, I weighed a Zaffiro (about 38g) and another tire selected randomly from my large pile of discards. It was half the weight (about 20g). OK, so that's only.... a fraction of a 9kg bike but still, I guess it adds up. Ditto wheels where there are real weight savings by upgrading. (and I understand a gram saved in wheels is worth some multiple of a gram saved elsewhere.)

That's no worse or better than breaking the right shifter cable at the end that goes into the shifter. In this case, it was user error for not ensuring the battery was securely fixed to the bike.

This is definitely where people are "ripped off" on bike specs. People look to the group set first when wheels and tires will matter so much more for speed and ride quality.

I'd rather have Shimano 105 and Mavic Ksyrium SLS than Dura-Ace and Mavic CXP 22.

The bike i've been looking at has a "105 group" with the tecktro brakes, Shimano FC-R565 crank (supposed to be "a hybrid between Tiagra and 105"), and a SRAM chain. 105 levers and derailleurs.
Also has Aksium race wheelset, instead of the CXP22 alot of the other bikes in this price range have. I know its not a huge upgrade on the wheels, but it is something.
I've looked at alot of things, and alot of bikes, and for my budget, this mix seems to be the best around, Tecktro brakes and all.

That drive train should be solid, shift well and last you many thousands of miles.

Which bike?

Jamis Icon Pro. I just told the shop (one man shop, my wife taught his daughter 3rd grade) get it yesterday. Should be ready Monday or Tuesday. Chose over Felt F75, and over the CAAD 10 (don't stone me).

Not to nit pick, but I would bet that the majority of those that are riding Di2 can fix their own flat.

thanks, i think it will be a good one. Bit of an upgrade from my '98 schwinn super sport anyway.

On a side note, "y'all" is plural, "all y'all" is also plural, but is used like an exclamation point. ie: "If y'all want some, that's fine, just come two at a time and I'll whip all y'all's hind ends". Not to be confused with "you'en's, which is plural possessive. ie: "Is that t-top from you'en's Camaro?"
