Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When I was stuck in the office every day I used to do three rounds of all eighteen flights of stairs (taking the elevator down in-between) twice a day. Good exercise.

yeah, great fun...until you experience anaerobic exhaustion and collapse in a steaming puddle of mucous and dog excretions with your heart screaming to get out of your chest after you raced straight uphill at top speed in a closed air environment...

Just back from a short run.

Running is so not awesome, despite Hummer's comments.

Weather forecast says more snow tomorrow and Tuesday. It's been over a week since my last ride, and it's looking like awhile until the next one.

Now is is the winter of my discontent.

Well I am 70 degrees and sunny with 20 mph winds gusting to 35 mph, from the NE. Maybe the gusting will die down by mid-afternoon. But maybe not. I'm going to go out and see how it goes. If it's not too bad, I'll head out into the headwind on a slight uphill grade for 10ish miles, then turn into a canyon which should be sheltered, another 3 miles of slight uphill. Then turn into what should be a tailwind canyon with some short hills and head home from there.

In theory. But it never really works out like that. The winds in reality seem to go any direction they want once you get into the canyon-y bits.

Haha, I may be back home in 20 min, we'll see.

That's what I was thinking you were going to say. A little sloppy I would think, but I guess close enough.

When I lived in PA I used to love XC skiing. Great cardio and crosstraining. If there's enough snow.

I did 3.5 miles of XC skiing on Saturday. Looks like I may be doing more in the next few days.

I would rather ride but it's better than nothing, and certainly better than running.

I have a photo of my mom when she was in high school, on her bike with the whole class at her house on bikes. 1938.

And with her siblings on their bikes too.
