700x23 both tires. I tried installing the front myself, got some rubbing issues with the tire, took it to a shop and the mechanic helped me get it working by shaving a little off the front of the fender. The back is also pretty tight but the axle is in the middle of the track end... if it was nearest to the seat tube I don't think a rear full fender would work. Neither tire rubs when just riding, but when I go over some bumpy stuff, there's a little noise and contact. It's keeping me nice and dry having full fenders though.

Thats a long stem. Is it 120mm?

bexley 01-09-08 02:45 PM

Nice rides. I would've thunk the double straps would be best for nice weather and clips for foul weather & long rides. It may depend on your shoes, but my instinct would be to prolong the doubles' lifespan by keeping em out of the rain. Oh, and clips are just so much better for long distances.

Is there other reasoning behind that?

I switch around the pedals regularly. Right now it's straps for riding around campus, clipless for longer rides on the road and rollers. I was doing the exclusive clipless thing for awhile but got pretty tired of doing the tapdance in class... but yeah, as far as riding itself, clipless feels better in the rain.

Yep. I could use a 110 maybe, swapped in a friends' 100mm before and it was too short for riding in the drops but 120 works pretty well.

I completed this build in early December. I've got 3 rides in on it so far:

I've made changes to it since the above photos were taken.

I've swapped out the IRC Piranha Pro tires for some Kendas that take higher pressure, and are more of a dual-purpose tire. I've also changed from a 107mm spindle BB to a 127.5mm spindle BB. With the shorter spindle, my heels were hitting the chainstays. I had to ride pigeon-toed to keep it from happening, and that caused my knees to hurt. Now my heels lightly brush the chainstays on occasion, but I'm used to that. I did have to respace the cog, and move the chainring to the inside to keep the chainline nice.

reedreeder 01-09-08 04:02 PM

can those chopped bars actually swing around and hit your top tube? or is the protector just for looks?

Serendipper 01-09-08 04:04 PM

Nagasawas are a dime a dozen.

Well, more like $12,000.00 a dozen. Nice build death hare, killer rabbit, whatever your name is. :)

I'm in ATL btw. You still here?

bonechilling 01-09-08 04:12 PM

Yes, they hit the top tube very much.

Serendipper 01-09-08 04:19 PM

I would change the ugly and uncomfortable seat to a pretty brown and uncomfortable NJS jawn...

..but that's me. Damn I want to build an NJS bike, but my next bike will probably be a modern alu or carbon racebike.

they make great work bikes... i did work with mine in the summer with a rack on the back, and a basket ziptied to the rack. those bike rack eyelets and fender eyelets make it a good all weather / cargo machine, and the tubing is pretty beefy.

what?! you mean no barspins?!

Sixty Fiver 01-09-08 05:19 PM

A little something I am working on... it still needs a brake and proper pedals but damn if this isn't a fun bike to ride.

It's a 1940 CCM Rambler that used to be a coaster bike/cruiser... I swapped in a fixed wheelset and replaced the stock stem, bars, and fork with modern components. the bars are still vintage and are merely cruiser bars that have been flipped, taped, and shellacked.

Sometimes a bike just feels perfect. Unfortunately, neither the Eimei nor the Makino felt/feel that way for me. Not bad, but not perfect.
