by "interesting choice" do you just mean a nontrendy choice?

drop bars are sensible because they offer a variety of hand positions at a variety of heights, so they let you position your arms (and therefor your torso, too) in several different ways.

track drops are another matter, but road drops set up at the height of the saddle are far from an oddity. it offers a comfy upright position as well as a more aggressive position.

This is the before pic of an early 70s Peugeot PX-10 that I snagged at a local junk store.

Here is the finished bike with Bluemel fenders painted to match.

im not knocking the bike or the road bars, i run road bars too! just saying i found the stem choice a little bit off-putting for me, not what id have gone with.

if i was a trend-hunter i wouldnt care about the stem, i just yell arrospok and RISERS!!! WHERES UR TOPTUBE PRTEKTR??!?!?!

I know you've probably learned your lesson, but come on. Would you have preferred risers with drops? People use drop bars for the shape, not just for the drop.

The Peugeot is stunning. Did you paint it yourself?

it never was about the bars dudes, it was about the stem. it looks fine, just thought it an interesting choice, just like a certain bike with a drop stem and riser bars looked good, but was still an interesting choice.

MOOT POINT. *goes to drop-drop bike and hugs her*

I love my fixed wheel bike, so simple.
Do about 6,000 miles per year on the fixed and a similar amount on the gear bikes including racing.

also, just because i've read questions/threads about this issue...

the wheels are weinmann dp18's which i bought for 130 bucks off ebay from a seller that just sells a bunch of them for cheap. a lot of people seemed to wonder about the quality of the rim -vs- a deepV and how well made they'd come. my buddy who runs a pro downhill shop inspected em and put them through a light torture test (light by downhill rim standards). they both came almost perfectly true. the only issue was the rear wheel's tension was a little low, so he just tightened it up quick and bam. sweet strong wheels for 200 bucks less than deepv's.

Thanks for that man. I just ordered a set from that same seller last night. Can't wait to get them.

This is why living in LA sucks. Every single thrift store and garage sale has been picked clean.

Nice. Did you chrome the reat-stays yourself? Or was that under the paint? Inspiring...

To the untrained eye this looked like a typical junk store POS. The only reason I even looked twice at it was for the barend shifters. When I got up close I noticed the lugs and the simplex dropouts.

t was a Salvation Army and when I asked the sleepy clerk for the price she snapped that "all the bikes were $5 unless marked otherwise."

I used to get some great deals at junk stores in N Long Beach and a couple in Lynwood. Go early in the morning.

Chrome was well-protected under the crappy paint job.

I'll say it again. This thing rules. Did you do the paint yourself?

rust! dear me, no. it's just places where the 30+ year old paint isn't there anymore. like that big line on the top tube. it's plenty beat-up, and the chrome is a little dull. i deliberately didn't take pictures of the scratched handlebars with the scuffed tape job.

i'm really, really fond of the Zeus hubs. and the cinelli criterium bars, which are FANTASTIC bars for short people.

Are those criteriums 65-40s? I know they have less Drop but do they have a little more reach than track bars? I'm short and my 3TTT pistas are too deep so I think these may be perfect.

piwonka 04-09-08 08:43 PM

i don't think model 65's have more reach than track bars (their drop is 144mm). especially not the 3t track bars. those are really deep and have crazy reach too.

Straws 04-09-08 08:44 PM

I guess this counts because it does have a fixed wheel on it, though i'm probably going to switch it to some freewheel pos soon.
