This is my first fixed gear, and so far it's a blast to ride. Granted that's only been around the neighborhood, but a blast none-the-less. :)

Cranks are a Specialized branded road triple I got off ebay with a brand new shimano BB for $25. Scored the gold chainring for $5. Wheels are Weinman's, and those were $150.

Not quite sold on the color combo, but it works for now.

You could teach a class on how to do and paint conversions. lately there has been a string of...incidents.

What brake calipers are those gold ones? They have a super long reach, considering those are 700's on 27" fork and the brake pads are at top of the slots. Plus they look awesome.

Haha, $5 Diacompe bmx knockoffs. :D I wasn't sure about them, but once I had them adjusted, they work great. The gold finish doesn't match anything else too well, but I think they tie everything in fairly nicely.

Here's a full body shot...it's kinda blurry though. :(

It looks like it matches the chain and chainring great, and the headset and headbadge ok. Looks great though.

Yeah...it's kind of a mishmash. The headbadge is actually the brass that was under the chrome and scratched paint. The headset was actually painted with the gold paintpen I used for the accents on the frame.

i think it's a damn good looking bike. leave it as it is. if you wanna try something else, build a new one.

Unfortunately very true. It's pretty impossible to make anything above 58cm look as beautiful as a well done 52cm frame. And anything above 60 just looks god awful.

We can add bike frames to airline seats and wrestling on the list of benefits of being short.

Not that it matters, but I think any frame smaller than 56 and bigger than 62 looks silly as hell.

I used to think my 60cm Paddy Wagon looked goofy, but I got over it. Now I kind of think I like the look of bigger frames -- as long as the rider is suited to it. That 67 reminds me of the Bill Walton bike:

So you are saying all my frames look silly ?

Here's a silly little bike that came into the shop the other day... I considered having my legs surgically shortened.

Can I ask how exactly you have stripped and painted it? Looks good for a DIY-project :)

nayr497 04-18-08 07:56 AM

I'm sure we've gone over this...but please remind me what crankset that is on the Casati above?

And cierrecart...excellent work! Yeah, don't change a thing. I'd have liked low profile rims, but that is constructive criticism, not a negative gripe. Maybe you already had those around? Overall a beauty. As someone said, leave it alone. If you want to change things, put that creative energy (and money) into something new. Just ride that as it is!

TheKingFiphtin 04-18-08 08:39 AM

I usually hate gold accents on bikes, but you did a really nice job. I think it's a really attractive bike. I would ride it in a heartbeat, though here in Wisconsin people would just think I'm a rabid football fan because of the green and gold. I wouldn't care. It's a good looking machine.

chris175 04-18-08 08:44 AM

any frame smaller than a 57 is rediculous looking. tall is good, we get hotter chicks. 59/60 is pretty much perfect.

inthemixte 04-18-08 09:05 AM

my vogue ride. 27" steel rims w/ no functional excuses:

cierrecart 04-18-08 09:10 AM

Thanks guys. The colors just kind of came to me as I was going through the process. I never really had a plan for it when I started stripping it down.

AS for what I did, it was just your standard strip and paint:

Removed everything
Scrubbed everything with scotchbrite, soap, and water
Removed decals with heatgun and razorblade
Removed any surface rust with wire brush
Sanded entire frame with 800 grit sandpaper
Masked off anything I didn't want painted
Found something to hang it from
Several coats primer
Several coats color
Several coats clear (I used about a can of each step)
Let dry for a few days.

Thats about it.

That's the way some of them were designed back in the 80'x bmx days. I actually grab the inner section because the outside bend isn't too comfortable.

bexley 04-18-08 09:51 AM

That's at least partly because you rotated the lever to an angle that's not very functional. If you had gigantic saddle-bar drop, it would make a bit more sense, but you've got almost none.
