Is that the KOOL chain?

TheKingFiphtin 04-17-08 07:54 AM

The Casati is beautiful, especially those bars. How is the shellac for longevity? Is it brittle or does it have some flex too it when the tape compresses? Let us know how it lasts, because I would love to steal that idea.

Yep.

As far as the durability of Shellac on cork tape. It's very soft after a day, not brittle at all and when it wears out [6 months] you can just add another few coats. It's also waterproof. People have asked me where I bought my Brooks bar wrap a few times. The key is the twine at the flats and cork in the bar ends.

Shellac lasts pretty much forever of you give it a light touch up every couple of years. Yellow cloth and amber shellac are a dead ringer for Brooks honey. It feels pretty good in the hands and adds a bit of grip over cloth or cork.

yep. I used amber shellac on the cork. Not a fan of cloth, with alum bars it doesn't provide enough cushion.

While I was hunting parts down for my Surly KM SS build, I ran across this for $300 and decided it was a decent one to kick around on while I build out my other. Nothing too special about it, but it's been a great little commuter, while the Torelli now is my 'big ride' bike. Course, had to explain how I went out for parts and came back with a whole other bike....

johnprolly 04-17-08 12:49 PM

those redlines are awesome. good find!

barba 04-17-08 01:18 PM

$300 is a great deal for that bike.

freecycle 04-17-08 01:22 PM

agreed, thats a great price for a bike like that

nwduffer 04-17-08 04:08 PM

Thanks guys. I know it's one my LBS was suggesting I look at, and then I happened to see this one used right after, in my frame size, so I couldn't resist, knowing what the new price was...not to mention, free front blinky light tossed in as well, right?

pyze-guy 04-17-08 04:51 PM

That redline is hot.

Shellaced bars look great too. I'd do mine like that but it would be like putting pirellis on a Yugo.

whoops...

Ok attempt number two at this. Bridgestone 400 circa 1980 something. Completely De brazed. No more hole for mounting a rear brake in the seat stay bridge. Track ends welded on. 90% gloss high reflective powder coat. Just need a nice day to take some better pictures. Too bad I can't ride it yet since I'm recovering from a concussion but it's calling me, "don't listen to the doctor he can't possibly mean don't ride for 8-12 weeks, you're ok take me for a spin."

a bridgestone 400 is nothing special.

cierrecart 04-17-08 09:24 PM

Finished my conversion today. Paid $20 for the frame and fork, spent another $250 or so on the rest of the parts. Stripped it and repainted....I may redo it and go with powdercoat if I find it's worthwhile.
This is my first fixed gear, and so far it's a blast to ride. Granted that's only been around the neighborhood, but a blast none-the-less. :)

Cranks are a Specialized branded road triple I got off ebay with a brand new shimano BB for $25. Scored the gold chainring for $5. Wheels are Weinman's, and those were $150.

Not quite sold on the color combo, but it works for now.

I think you did a damn good job. I like the colors I think you should keep it like that, very classy/original.

Whatever, tall people shouldn't even be allowed to ride. They make for some ugly frames.
