Gary Fisher Kaitai ghetto conversion...been running strong for 2 seasons of riding now (about 3 rides a week for the past two years on this particular bike plus one SS race) and I just threw some new treads on it. I run 32/16 normally, but I have it set up for 32/18 in this picture, which is the first time I have ever tried this combination. I ride very hilly and rocky terrain so I thought it would help, but I'm going to switch back to 16t becuase I just feel I can't carry my momentum as well with an 18t cog.

Sure, it looks like a clown bike with the blue tires, but they were uber cheap.

650c? How hard it is to find good tires in that size?

Dogbait 05-29-06 09:07 PM

Finally finished putting the Kogswell together and took it out for a ride. Seems faster but I don't have any way to measure it.... sure is quiet. It's a Kogswell G58 frame with a Miche Primato crank and bottom bracket. Miche chainwheel is 46 teeth and EAI cogs are 17 and 19, all 1/8". Hubs are IRO fixed/fixed laced to Sun CR18 rims with Sapim 14g spokes. The chain is an HKK Vertex with MKS chain tensioners. The front brake is a Kogswell (Promax?) and the rear is a Tektro 521AG. Levers are Tektro 200 mounted on a Nitto Randonneur bar and Technomic stem. Saddle is a Specialized Alias and the seatpost is an American Classic. I am looking forward to a long ride tomorrow.

Dogbait, that's a very clean, grown-up looking single speeder! I am inspired.

Nice piece of machinery you have there. Two questions: What is the bicycle weight and what fork do you have?

You just have to rob dolface's stash, and you'll be set (though riding away fast enough to keep him from catching you might be tough).

I got those tires from pricepoint.com. They are Panaracer Fire XC 2.1's, and they were $15/tire.

I think the bike weights in right around 25 lbs in its current form I believe, which isn't too bad. When the semi slicks are on it, it's right at 21ish. The Panaracer tires are very heavy in my opinion, but I'm light, so it doesn't really make a difference to me. The fork is a Rock Shox Judy XC "Hydracoil" set up for 100mm travel. It's nothing high tech, but it's enough to soften things out.

Take care,
Kevin

That is a great SS MTB...if you're ever in the Rochester area you should check out the Dryer Road MTB area. You and my boy Andrew will have the only two SS machines there.
