No they're fine as long as they aren't obnoxious like this:

evanyc 08-11-06 03:13 PM

yeah, im ****ing pleased as **** with how the bike turned out, and getting the wrong size the first time actually turned into a blessing and allowed me to make a few changes.

also, build specs:

true temper platinum ox tubing

chris king head set
phil wood bottom bracket
paul cranks
paul high-flange flip flop hubs laced to velocity aeroheads
thomson elite seat post

just need a seatpost, and the ability to install my bottom bracket!
going to have sugino 75s, and a green brooks champion edition!
wheels are sanshin/ukai

this frame has weird drillium trackends, ive never seen that before

12XU 08-11-06 05:26 PM

How much did the JCoast stem run? A thread on the frame listserv was tossing around a few hundred dollars including labor and materials which strikes me as umm...NUTS.

evanyc 08-11-06 05:28 PM

$200. not a cheap purchase but worth it for me.

First, it's completely hand made and while I've never made one myself I can imagine that the parts aren't cheap (I don't even know if anyone even makes expander bolt wedge things anymore) and the fabrication is tricky. Second, have you ever tried to get anything chromed? **** is pricey.

$200 seems pretty decent to me.

$200 is a steal...but these are only for the people in the know. No average Joe is goin to spend that much on a stem. But wait till they catch the bug and learn a little more, they will not spend less than $100 on any part of their bikes.

12XU 08-11-06 09:02 PM

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the quality of such a beautiful stem, but it's not necessary to have a custom stem. Hell, the steel Nitto looks pretty damn nice and at half the price.

sloppy robot 08-11-06 09:09 PM

call me crazy.. but they look like polished ITM stems..
