rascal is not finished yet, but i thought maybe the bf style police could help me. she is currently still in partial STP mode, hence the fatty handlebars and bottle cage, but the gearing is back to 47/18 from 47/16. rascal has the wheelset off my yellow conversion. i have a black paul hub which im planning on building up, but i dont know what rims to choose for the new wheelset. also need a new engine,i was thinking black 75s and goin to 1/8". and new wrap perhaps. this bike is used primarily for commuting downtown, going to school, picking up groceries, combatting terrorists, carrying laundry, running over snakes, working as a messenger, singletrack, spreading freedom and democracy, double centuries, cyclocross, working as a bike cop, racing in alleycats, keirin racing, the tour de france, fighting supervillains, and climbing 6000m peaks without supplemental oxygen.

Those bars rock. Thats what I use on my SS.

I live in Ballard too. I'll be on the lookout for this bike now.

Did you do STP in one day or two? How were those rolling hills fixed?

billypilgrim 07-26-06 03:55 PM

stp 2 days, but it was a blast. i ran 47/16 both days, but i would have ran something stiffer the first day if i had known how flat it was going to be. a LOT of fun. dont normally ride CM but i probably will this month after what happened in june.

Cool. Yeah. Lotsa rolling hills on the second day.

I did two days with gears last year and one day with gears this year. I'm considering 1 day fixed for next year but I have plenty of time to wuss out. 47x16 seems plenty tall to me, but then I run 46x18 most of the time.

I managed to miss the excitement at last month's Mass but it sounded pretty messed up to me. I'll be there.

The Serotta is in fact custom built. About the stem: of course as you know modern stems attach directly to the steerer tube of the fork, and come with excess tubing that you cut off to your optimum height, spacers were left on so to allow progressively lowering the stem to the optimum height. Of course I could a have just chopped the tube to the kit specified height and flipped the stem when I got it, but that’s a radical and less flexible option. As I dial it in, the spacers with most likely go, but for now there fine, even if dorky or something The bike fits like a glove, Serotta’s are amazingly engineered, stiff yet never harsh, responsive, fast, and agile, the best bike I’ve ever ridden.

The chain is 1/8" and no, the fork is not bent.

This was a 14.00 thriftstore find. 531 Reynolds tubing. My buddy Sam painted it with Imrom type paint in a nice British green. He then stripped it and highlighted the lugs in gold. Cottered Stronglight cranks. GB engraved bars. Changed rims to 700's with ss spokes and rebuilt the Shimano hubs. Wrights saddle. Geared it to 63" which is pretty low but works well for me in the rolling terrain I ride.

humancongereel 07-26-06 10:33 PM

ha ha, i don't dream of you racking yourself. however, your position in the photo does lead one to certain conjecture, certain predictions....

i don't mean the "trick," but the fact that he posted that photo.

Off topic, but where do you get a GT frame at? I assume it's older, so what year would I look for?
sick bike by the way.

i got my frame from a friend, who got it from another guy. i'm not sure about the history of it past that point.
they don't make them anymore, so you just have to track the used ones down. i'm not sure what the exact year is, but i think they're mainly from the 1998-2001 range; something like that, at least.
just keep an eye out around here and ebay, they pop up from time to time. good luck!

jet sanchEz 07-27-06 02:58 PM

I got mine on eBay....the seller said it was a 1998. Nice and fast and stiff ;) It is on page 423.

I just put some riser bars and Oury grips on my C'dale. I'm really happy with the looks. I won't be able to ride it for a couple more weeks. I just had surgery to release a compressed nerve by my calf muscle. At least I have something to look forward too during my recovery. Not to mention possibly having my first pain free ride in over a year.

Wheels are the next upgrade or cranks who knows.
