Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I've never been to the Carter's range but if it's anything like their store over here on 59 and Murphy, they can sod off. I once had a ****** bag old guy tell me I couldn't purchase or hold an AR15 because I wasn't 21.

That does suk. Some people just don't want to sell guns, they just want leave them behind the counter. I've run into situations like this at gun shops and most recently a bike shop. It's always nice to ask for the manager or owner and let then know that their sales person is losing business for them. They love to hear from you.

I'm pleasantly surprised this thread has not turned into a knee-jerk anti-gun thread. somehow I have always thought of bicyclists as super-liberals with narrow minds about everything. I think the fixed gear scene is different and thats why i like it. its more real (from the street).

the thread we had about the guy who grabbed his bike thief in the neck pissed me off. the main poster who was annoying is from my state (which is a big liberal state full of bleeding hearts). a few people tried to say he went "too far" by grabbing his neck and i was like WTF??? So the fact that there are many sensible gun owners here makes me feel proud. Americans who are law abiding and respectful absolutely deserve to carry concealed. it doesnt make everybody a gun freak, its just the way it is here.

truth. You dont need to carry a gun, just a fatty chain or a U and you have every ounce of defense you need if someone gets violent with you and you need to defend yourself.

What I find amusing is that I was initially advocating that either ur u-lock or a knife ought to be enough to ward off even a pistol wielder but because I mentioned I'd pack if it were handy some peeps talkin down on the heat.

Meh.

U-locks,guns, butter knives.... they're all just tools. You can dig out someone's eyeballs with a spoon if you've got the russets.

Only pull a gun on some if you plan on killing them, otherwise don't do it.

Not to get into a political argument, because I dont really care if you carry a gun but the bill of rights provides for citizens to keep and bear arms in a state militia. Your state has a militia, it's called the national gaurd, so please dont use the bill of rights as the reasoning behind why you should be able to carry a gun. I dont think shooting someone is an appropriate response really, but I can see if you lived in a rougher place and felt unsafe how carrying a handgun could be justified. I usually am a pretty avid pacifist, but for some reason I can see both sides of this argument, I'm not going to attack you, so I could care less.

Second of all, where in Milwaukee and what time? I was out last night, intoxicated on my bike and everything was cool, even in sketchy Riverwest.
It was between Cass and Van Buren on Juneau. Those ******s apparently robbed someone else a few blocks over about 1 hour later.

There aren't many things I would shoot or stab someone over. My bike isn't one of them. You are better off keeping your eyes open and riding fast.

I agree, the only reason I see for using a weapon, or really violence over is if you or someone else is in danger.

arguably the 2nd amendment is just as much about citizens' right to keep and bear arms against the Federal government... as opposed to allowing the Federal government to monopolize the use of force.

that said... I have nothing more to say in this thread, although I doubt it's fixed-gears in general that explains the presence/prevalence of non-liberals who love their guns... I think that's the internet.

I dont see much over the top gun love in this thread. It's one of the more pleasant threads of this kind that have occured recently. I think there is just a significant lack of gun hate.

The second amendment states:

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Back when this was written, the militia was the people. There was no national guard.

All I know is that I don't advocate violence at all. But if it comes down to it, I pick myself and I'll use whatever tools I can to ensure that. Right now, it's a U-Lock. When I turn 21, it'll be a Browning Hi Power.

I think the OP did the right thing by riding on. The guy was a dick for punching him, but going back and burying a u-lock in his head really wouldn't really solve anything and just bring more cops and litigation. And trust me, the court system is a *****.

I didn't say "over the top," did I?

Beyond that I'm not interested in getting bogged down in an extended discussion on the subject, I have no problem with people who enjoy firearms (I might have a problem with how people use them, but I don't think it's worth getting into).

edit: sorry, I realized perhaps my comment about the 2nd amendment may have, taken in conjunction with my comment about the internet, been read as implying these posters are people intent on overthrowing the government or the like; that wasn't my intention... the two were unrelated.

This thread got me thinking about what I would do in a situation like this if I did get knocked off the bike. Would a U-lock to the face be justifiable in court as self defense in this situation?

Also to the guys that carry, if someone knocked you off your bike, what would you do? Draw and yell "BACK THE **** OFF!!!" Just curious what would be legal in this situation, and what you would do.

There are innocent people dying of starvation and disease around the world, whats some ******* getting a bullet to the head in America going to do? People are too sensitive to death.

And as a Canadian, all of this gun talk is extremely foreign to me. It's not that I'm anti-handgun. It's just that this kind of prevalence doesn't exist up here. Different gun culture.

This was covered earlier a guy punching you in the face while you ride by isn't near the point of legally being able to brandish a firearm.

He'd have to threaten you with a weapon, or you'd have to prove in court that you felt your life was threatened, where in litigation any kind of opposing attorney would make very hard to do.

The thread got to this point because we were joking around and discussing shooting the shiat outta the dude just like we talk about bludgeoning someone with a u-lock. Instances where this type of activity actually takes place are next to non-existant despite the occasional piggy back in our brains it may take.

Using a firearm out of your home is usually very unlikely a defensible position unless this person is obviously directly threatening you.

Displaying a firearm publically when you're carrying concealed is likely going to land you in jail.
