tell her to vary her hand positions as much as possible while riding. try to teach her to "float" above the handlebars.. just lightly holding them as opposed to death gripping. some of that will improve with time as her core gets stronger

as far as stems, get one so that she's not leaning too far forward and holding herself up with her hands. also make sure the saddle is tilted properly so it's not pushing her towards the bars

i get wrist pain really easily so i pay close attention to stuff like that

Nah, probably go for something black and cheap, since I don't really know what exactly is causing the problem for her discomfort. Thanks though, I would've jumped on that if I had bullhorns! lol

i'm actually thinking about what else I should get from your site... it's so hard.. haha.

her brooks is perfectly level, so I don't think she's tilting anywhere, I'm almost certain it's a combination of a long stem and her being a new rider.

i usually tilt the seat back a tiny bit to encourage me to sit on the "sit bones" but just the fact she is a new rider is probably a much bigger factor. get a new stem and encourage her to switch up the hand positions

Counted seven roadies out and about today. Odd, because I've never seen more than one or two MTB commuters in a day. Twas weird for the area.

A level Brooks (especially a B17) is usually an uncomfortable Brooks. It sounds like she's using her arms to hold herself up. Try tilting the saddle up in front just a wee bit.
Also, she may just be gripping the bars too damn tight.

Considered, if I had a nice job I'd definitely pick up something like this:

In light of the price tag, he suggests that this shirt is geared toward the well-off bike commuter who wants to show up at work looking fly, rain or shine. If that's you and you have $300 to spare on a finnicky shirt, then this is the shirt for you. I'll stick to my raincoat, thank you very much.

I found out the guy I sold my motobecane to crashed and destroyed the thing and his helmet hours after driving all the way down here to pick it up from me. I feel really bad for him. I'm not sure what to do. The money had already been put on my CC... argh. He was so stoked about it too.

Well you're not responsible for it; if you sold him a sound and solid bike in the first place....

crashed his car? or the bike?

I don't really see anything you can do man.. you sold the bike fairly and it was out of your possession, right?

yeah it was the bike and it was solid. I road it exactly like it was and pushed it hard for nearly a year. He seemed like a pretty gnarly guy so I have no idea how he was riding but he said the front hub cracked, the wheel tacoed and sent him over the handbars. It was an old crappy raleigh hub but there was no visible signs that the thing wasn't road-worthy. Like I said I've been riding it for a year with as much confidence in it as in any other part of the bike. I haven't seen pictures but he seemed like an honest guy who loved biking. Anyway yeah I know it's not really my problem but I still feel bad for the guy. I know how it feels to lose some cash. I know it wasn't the greatest bike but that thing was 36 and counting. Old (nearly)bulletproof frames like that are like an investment.

I think I read somewhere that old French parts are made of some unique alloy that after exactly 36 years assplodes due to molecular disintegration. You're lucky you sold that ticking timebomb when you did.

tried to stop by this local bike shop to check out those parlee frames and it's one of those hipster "anti malls" in costa misery. place has such a poorly designed circulation plan that it's clogged up w/ traffic and if you take the wrong turn you end up out onto the street and it's just a mess so i didnt look at the bike at all and ended up just driving around. FAIL

Today I noticed while trying to angle my lady's brooks saddle was that the bolt head for the seatpost is damaged. Can I just run to any hardware store and get it replaced or do I have to order a more specific version?
