Today I had nothing to do so I decided to do something that I have always been a bit afraid to do.

Got my ass handed to me by a monster roadie. Never seen the guy before, but he was strong.
I thought I was doing pretty well too. I held onto him for about 5 miles on rolling terrain. But it was on. I pulled twice then backed off I was about to explode. Now I know I have to get a way to monitor my cadence. I was cranking as fast as I could to hang onto this guy at about 24-25mph as best as I could tell. I just glanced at the speedo once during this hammer fest. No doubt we were moving. I could tell there was no way he was going to give in to a guy on a ss. Besides I was already quite a ways into my home commute. As we neared a busy intersection, he looked at me and said "Damn dude, That's an awesome bike...Pretty quick for a fixie." Good thing my route peeled off to the left. At least I got to hold onto some of my dignity. He's the kind of guy I like to ride with if I'm on a geared bike. I do know he was pushing at least 52 and whatever the third cog up happened to be. Maybe a 14. His cadence wasn't as fast as mine as far as I could tell. Looks like a job for an ice cold Shock-Top and some serious stretching so I don't cramp up. |
rode home in 30mph gusting headwind. had to pedal down a hill i can usually coast down at about 25mph (according to a buddy in a car pacing me). now cleaning swords/dagger for fencing tournament on Saturday.

About the ass-drafting, I would be bothered just because I think it's a little sad that someone has to use you as a human shield to ease their ride. One of the best things about cycling is the sense of freedom I get when riding. I ain't trying to rely on someone or hope I can "catch a ride" by riding right on their ass.
The latter (RDS) however strikes me as discourteous and unsafe. |

This is totally an aside, but there is a big difference imo between doing a ride where drafting is encouraged and expected and RDS (random-drafting syndrome). The former is alot of fun and a big part of my enjoyment in cycling: going fast. You push yourself just as hard as you would in a solo ride (or harder), but you get to go fassssssssssssssssssssssst. speed is fun.
The latter (RDS) however strikes me as discourteous and unsafe. As I was about to ride home from work, I noticed my rear was flat. Got a chance to bust out my PDW Shiny Object inflator. Thing works like a freaking charm. If you can afford it and want a small, simple CO2 inflator, get one right now. With a pump, the longest part of changing out a flat is the pumping. With the P-Dub, it was literally seconds. Now I have the sneaking suspicion that a student from my coworker's class let out some of my air. I pumped up the "flat" tube at home and it's still holding air right now. Wtf... |
sometimes slow leaks will fool you into thinking the tube is still holding air after removing the tube, pumping, feeling for the leak, and finding nothing.

Received my Euro-G cap from Retrogression today. Didn't fit as I fully expected (CURSE THIS AFRO), so the girlfriend claimed it as her own. :P

c02 is cool, but pumps are mandatory, as are patch kits.
what happens when you get more flats then c02 cartridges? fwiw i also use c02 and rarely, rarely have to use my pump or patch kit. but when i do, im real glad that they're there. |
Found out why I've killed 4 tubes in the past week with weird looking failures all in the same place: there's a tear in the tire bead and it's all deteriorating, when I rubbed it some more fell off and now there's about 1/2" completely missing. The tire's only about 2 months old, too. Cheap commuter tire (Kenda Kwest) but still; ugh. Warranty replacement, I hope.
On the positive side, putting two layers of gaffer's tape in place of the missing section of bead held up just fine for my ~6 mile ride home. But I definitely don't trust it to hold for too much longer that way before killing another tube. |
Today I placed 8th in a Strava segment on my commute home.
Then I saw that it was out of 9 people. |
