Friendly reminder: Ask Scrod is for questions unrelated to Retrogression (most of the time), if you have questions about orders and whatnot you get from RG, take it to the RG thread in the marketplace.

Scrod,
Possibly Retro related, if so ignore this. Until I stumbled across this thread I was planning on upgrading to an Omnium crankset. I ride roughly 18 miles a day in Boston. Even though I'm light there is definitely some torque involved sprinting light to light. Can you recommend a few alternatives? I don't mind a higher priced set if the life will be significantly longer.

Your question is more related to crankset choice than to RG. What are you using now?
Omniums are a great, very stiff crankset (although I have seen quite a few QC issues recently) but I had bad experience with the GXP bottom bracket. Angie has a set on her 721TR now and they are problem free so far. She's also about half my weight.
Andels are great bang for the buck but I find them to be pretty damn ugly - especially the non drive side arm. If you're going to splurge and want a crankset that will last a long time, go with 75s and a Protype BB from Ben's.

Appreciate the advice. I'm actually running a crankset I pulled off of my previous Masi Speciale about a month ago. You can find a photo of the drive side in the PedalRoom link below. Fairly certain this thing is literally bending during an all out sprint, haha. Upgrades are overdue. I haven't come across the Omnium without the BB included, I think I've ruled that one out from the collective experience people have had with that setup. Just checked out the Sugino with the Prototype, what is your take on the Sugino Messenger?

The Messenger is a good crankset but most likely won't be much stiffer than the Brev M crank you already have.

Weak. Ok, round 2. Can you give me another good, better, best scenario? Thanks for your time man.

Mr Scrod
Anything structurally wrong with the Leader 727 or do people only hate on it due to aesthetics?
Thanks,
Aristo

People just don't like it because it's an ugly duckling.

Thank you sir. I like the way it looks and I need a 60-61 frame and the 725 doesnt seem to come in that size anymore. I appreciate the quick response.

Scrod- Do you know if the leader S803 steel forks match the new 2012 722 heritage frames in their respective colors? I can't find a definitive answer elsewhere.

The S803 V2 forks are only available in chrome, raw and black.

Scrod,
Picking up an old Trek 1000 to try out some gears. It's got a 25.4mm clamp quill stem. I don't like traditional bend drop bars and was planning to grab a set of Soma Highway One bars, but they only come in 26.0. Do you know any 25.4 modern compact drop bars? If not, do you think it's plausible to put 26.0 bars in the 25.4 stem with some filing?

I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell me I'm an idiot for saying so but if it's an old stem that's most likely been tightened/loosened many times, you may be okay. My beater has 26.0 bars in a 25.4 quill stem and they installed without any trouble at all. If it's a tight fit, you could always file down the inner edges a hair just to smooth them out and keep them from biting into the bars.

How about the first version? (https://store.citygrounds.com/store/p...-Red-1-1-8%22/)
Coghouse offers them as a pair, which leads me to believe that they do match... but the colors don't seem to quite match based on individual pictures of both, but pictures tend to be poor representations of color.

Definitely not Scrod, but I've been told that the tighter bends of a compact handlebar are not likely to fit through the opening of a 25.4 mm stem. That's not to contradict Scrod, but just with a brand new 25.4 stem it might be a problem, as he says a used stem may work. But I was told it was for that reason that they don't make bars with compact or ergo drops in 25.4 as they wouldn't fit on a brand new stem. It could be that the person who told me that was talking out of his ass, but, if not, just letting you know that there might not be any point in looking any further for the bars you want in 25.4.
Again, not trying to pretend to be Scrod, but wishing I could eat breakfast like him. Mmmmm, stuffed peppers with eggs and chorizo....

Sounds like a potentially valid concern. The bike is an '88 model; it's been ridden very little and in storage for 15-20 years now so I doubt the bars have been removed much(if ever). Nonetheless, I'll budget for a new stem and grab one if necessary but I'll try the stock one first. Thanks for the heads up!
