aside from using the tool, you can tweak the link to loosen it

- the tool basically does the same thing.

That diagram hairnet posted sums it up. If you have thumbs, it's an easy fix.

Oh, and get a new chain. Miche chains are crap.

KMC 710-SL is my favorite.

What chain tool would you recommend with the KMC 710-SL and the mushroomed pins? I thought I recalled you answering it somewhere else but I don't recall what thread.

Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?

Scrod,
I'm still debating pedal styles
MKS Slyvans Or
BMX style platforms? I will be running your "Retro" Velcro straps. The problem is I just read that the MKS are a bit "wider" than track pedals for comfort?
I'm riding a conversion so there may be an issue of pedal strike....165 cranks?
And Pedal grip/traction in the wet with Rain boots? I'm guessing a set of platforms pedals will provide all around better traction. What do you think? What do you prefer in poor weather?

The Park CT-3 will work but you've got to be really careful. I prefer using the Cyclo Rivoli chain tool because it has a little more room for the thicker, oddly-shaped side plates:

No. I lived there for a short while back in 1999 and pretty much hated it. It's an amazing city with a lot of great history - but it wasn't for me.

I'm really not a fan of Sylvans. They're not wide by any means but I find the cages to stick up a bit too high and dig into the outer edge of my feet. If you plan on riding in any kind of boot or bigger shoe, platforms are the way to go.

In poor weather, I'd go clipless with shoe covers.

But like Scrod said, if you're going to eventually wear boots or thick shoes, platforms are the most practical.

Personally, I'm really not a fan of clipless for doing any kind of commuting. I gave them an honest go - and really liked them for times when I just wanted to ride and get some distance in without being on my way somewhere - but for general, everyday riding I found them to be more of a pain in the ass than they were worth.

How does the width of the odyssey platforms measure up to the MKS sylvan's? Pedal stike a non-issue?

Not to mention you will have to carry a extra pair of shoes with you if your commuting!
I'm already loaded down with food, books, pens, markers, h2o bottle, and many other things like rain pants and such. But for now I travel kinda light since a round trip for me is 15 miles! The last thing I want is to put a pair of shoes in my bag with my lunch! Or have to carry around a set of damp cycling shoes in my hands all day.

They're about a half-inch wider than Sylvans. I have a set on my beater/rain bike -a Raleigh conversion with 170mm cranks - and have never struck a pedal. I try to stay conscious of avoiding pedal strike when riding that bike though.
