Very cool, I just made a new friend in the fixed community here. He has a bone stock Capo, very nice! With that wheelset it would be very stealthy! :thumb:

So what would you say the comparison would be in the difference in the archtypes and the A23's would be?

Scrod,

I'm considering going with Ti for my next road bike. Do you have any experience or thoughts on titanium?

It's either a 105 equipped bike with Zona(Mr. Pink) or a Rival equipped Ti bike. About a $700 price difference(for the titanium(. I don't have a bike shop local to me that carries any Ti bikes so I can't test-ride beforehand.

Thanks!

Scrodzilla 11-13-12 04:16 PM

Ti seems to be more of an attempted trend that never really took off aside from a (miniscule number of cyclists who swear by it) than anything else.

Other than working on a ti few bikes here and there at the old shop where I worked, I don't really have much experience with it - but I can tell you that everyone I've ever encountered riding a ti road frame has been either a Fred or an extreme weirdo with more money than physical or mental ability.

Personally, I think the cost/logic ratio is way off and titanium is overkill for what most normal people use bicycles for. An All-City rep brought a Mr. Pink into the shop about a month ago and I highly doubt you'll be let down in any way by that bike.

ddeadserious 11-13-12 05:03 PM

Thank you for talking some sense into me. The premium for the titanium bike really doesn't make sense, it just seems like it might be neat to try. Maybe I'll keep an eye on eBay when I get some extra money and see if I can pick up a used one for cheap.

Next dilemma that you may be able to help with; do I get the 2012 Mr. Pink with the Ritchey cockpit/seatpost and Formula/Alex wheelset, or do I wait a month and get the 2013 Mr. Pink with the Salsa cockpit, FSA seatpost, and 105/CXP22 rims?

Scrodzilla 11-13-12 05:21 PM

Wait.

Scrod or NS Consortium,

What's up with the Concor Supercorsa WCS? Basically the same as the Concor Supercorsa, but suede? What does WCS stand for?

Google couldn't tell me anything.

Scrod, can you share any truthiness about the differences between the KMC Devil 101 and the KMC K710SL chains? I wouldn't mind spending $10 extra to get something better but I don't want to be bamboozled by "track" appearing in the name of the product. Thanks.

Dannihilator 11-13-12 09:12 PM

Both are completely different from each other. For one, the connecting link is a bit different for the D101 than it is for the K710SL, in fact the D101 comes with a little packet of white lithium grease to use on the connecting link before installation. That doesn't come with K710SL. Can't go wrong either way, but I would probably say the extra $10 is worth the difference. Have used a K710SL and am currently on a D101.

WCS = World Championship Series. In this case, the colorways of the "WCS" series of concors represent each color in the champion stripe from the rainbow jersey that a world champion gets to parade around in after winning.

5 colors, each representing a stripe, collect them all:

Dan's right.

Also, the D101 has bushings where the K710 does not and the plates are considerably thicker. I've used just about everything and honestly never thought I'd find a chain I liked more than the K710-SL and thought the Devil was mostly hype - until I finally bit the bullet and tried one (it's literally the quietest, most buttery-smooth chain I've ever used).

I've got about 1000 miles on my D101 and most likely won't ever use anything else after the K710 SLs on my BK and Leader wear out.

Dan - how is yours holding up?

Muffin Man 11-13-12 09:31 PM

Just fine, best chain I've ever used.

If you're going to sell off the wheels, it may not matter much (although you may be able to sell the 105/Mavic wheels for a little bit more). can you get a discount on the 2012 through the shop where you work?

ddeadserious 11-13-12 09:49 PM

Yeah, All City already marked the 2012 down a bit, plus they give an additional discount for bike shop employees. I was just curious if your call to wait was based on the wheelset or the cockpit, because I think I'd prefer the Ritchey cockpit to the Salsa one, but not for any particular reason.

I'll just have to see when my Tarmac sells and figure it out from there. Maybe I'll build a wheel set first and wait for the 2013 to become available. Thanks for the advice to my scatterbrained decision rambling.

Thanks Leuky. Anyone know about performance differences? Same mold and all that right? Just asking because I remember something about the updated Turbos not being as good as the re-issues.

Only thing I could gather is that the WCS's are suede, and the colors besides black don't wear very well because of that.

The Ritchey/Salsa cockpit is comparable and petty much comes down to which logo you like better.

If you'll be building the wheels, have you considered Archetypes?

The current leather Turbo 1980 reissue is much better the the synthetic reissues previously on the market.

All Concor Supercorsa saddles are suede except the white one (which is smooth leather) and Supercorsa X (which is synthetic/vegan). I'm in love with my Concor.

Questions answered. You guys are awesome.

For some reason, my mind always jumps to A23s when I consider a wheelbuild, but I'd build an Archetype wheelset. Any idea how they'll hold up to braking?

Scrodzilla 11-13-12 10:17 PM

They're made with a machined sidewall and anodized after machining.

H+Son's anodizing seems to hold up pretty well. Angie's SL42 on her 722TS shows no sign of brake wear after nearly 7 months of riding. YMMV on a road bike when braking all the time.

ddeadserious 11-13-12 10:28 PM

Count me in then, I'll give them a shot. Still thinking Novatec hubs, any other recommendations?

Scrodzilla 11-13-12 10:32 PM

I still stand by Novatecs. Unless you're looking for something flashier, they really can't be beat for the price.

ddeadserious 11-13-12 10:39 PM

No need for flashy. If they're as solid as their track hubs(which it seems they are), I'll be more than satisfied with them.

Mumonkan 11-14-12 05:09 PM

Got any recommendations for a fork to go on a pompino?
<$200, 1 1/8", canti studs, not a boat anchor, fender eyelets, room for 32's, maybe crabon

(For cx purposes and all weather HTFU'ing)

alecjahn 11-14-12 05:21 PM

Weinmann DP 18 - Cool super-cheap rim or super cheap POS rim? Need something that comes in red to slap on the roadie. Not sure if I really care enough to get anything notable.

Are you just buying the rims and building wheels with them or a pre-built set?

DP18s are decent for the money but they're heavy (687g claimed but it's probably higher).

In all honesty, unless you're getting a screaming deal on a complete wheelset I think you should spend a few extra bucks and get Velocity rims. Deep Vs weigh in at 520g and Fusions are only 475g (actual weight on my shop scale) if you still want that deep look.

I'll do some looking around. I may be able to pick something up on closeout for you at a really good price.

Send me an e-mail so I don't forget between now and going back to the shop in the morning.
